SACRAMENTO – Senator Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) has announced that the California Department of Finance officially notified the Legislature yesterday on how it will allocate almost $1.8 billion from California’s share of the federal Coronavirus Relief Fund to cities and counties. The money will help fund public health, public safety, and other services to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
“One of my top priorities during the COVID-19 pandemic is fighting to ensure local governments receive their fair share of public resources,” said Senator Bates, the Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee. “I am grateful that city and county governments in Orange and San Diego counties will receive needed funding to save lives and jobs. While more needs to be done to help local governments, the formal announcement of the $1.8 billion allocation is a welcome step in the right direction.”
The notification letter from the Department of Finance includes allocations for each city and county – the amounts have been updated based on new 2020 population estimates. As noted in the letter, the funds will be sent out in phases, with the first distributions consisting of one-sixth of the total amounts available to each local entity. Those funds will be sent by approximately August 1, 2020, then September 1, 2020, and the remainder will be allocated in October 2020.
