Supervisor Jim Desmond Explains How Fear-Mongering has Distorted Public Perception of the Coronavirus

It’s incredibly important that the public remains careful, not fearful, about the threat of the coronavirus. San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond recently discussed why it’s so important for San Diego to stay vigilant against scare tactics and to pay close attention to the facts when it comes to the true fatality rate of COVID-19.

Desmond analyzed San Diego County’s data and presented his conclusions in a recent interview. “Only six [deaths] were due purely and solely to COVID-19. What that tells us is that those with underlying conditions need to have protections in place… we should be able to get… healthy people back to work while protecting those with underlying conditions,” Desmond said.

Most San Diegans don’t have to live in fear of the coronavirus. We must remember that the elderly and the immunocompromised are the groups in the most danger of dying from COVID-19. When these preconditions exist, we need to continue erring on the side of caution, but can rest assured that San Diego—as a whole—doesn’t have to live in fear.

Desmond noted that some local officials and the media have “twisted the narrative,” causing many people to become irrationally fearful of the coronavirus. Nonetheless, the data suggest that most citizens will be able to return to work without worry and should continue to practice social distancing protocol to protect themselves and others.
