In light of the economic situation that COVID-19 has brought to our nation, tax leniency is a necessary provision that should be offered to everyone impacted by the virus.
San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister has taken such actions to protect taxpayers during these unusual circumstances. His office is now accepting penalty cancellation requests for those directly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.
“We know COVID-19 has had widespread consequences for people in San Diego, California and across the nation, and we want to be as compassionate and lenient as possible,” said McAllister. “We will cancel late penalties for those directly affected by the virus.”
Taxpayers can use the penalty cancellation request form on the Treasurer-Tax Collector’s website to request that their penalty is waived. They should be prepared to provide some sort of documentation of financial hardship to explain the circumstances affecting them, and to include a check for the second installment of property taxes owed. Requests must be submitted through mail by June 30.
“This is the right thing to do in these uncertain times for our taxpayers. We act as stewards of the public and are guided by the motto, ‘The noblest motive is the public good,’ which is at the heart of our collective county conscience,” McAllister added. “Indeed, we are bound together in a common purpose to do the right thing. This is a time to be compassionate, sensitive and understanding.”
