California Truckers Protesting Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez’s AB 5

The California Trucking Association recently protested the infamous AB 5, new state legislation which forces businesses to treat all workers, even independent contractors, as employees. They’re fighting for the ability of truckers to profit from their own vehicles while setting their own flexible schedules, both of which are being made increasingly difficult thanks to AB 5.

However, they’re not the only ones upset. Journalists, rideshare drivers, and artists are also feeling the backlash, as their ability to work under their own time constraints is key to their professions.

Forcing businesses to hire them may offer sick days and overtime pay, but it takes away the number one reason people enter into freelance professions: self-employment. For many, that’s not a tradeoff they’re willing to make.

Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, the notorious sponsor of AB 5, gets to watch as her constituents suffer and burn from her disregard. The fact that she’s not listening to citizens negatively impacted by her legislation speaks volumes about her interests as a San Diego representative. Until she’s stopped, Gonzalez will continue to embarrass her city, hurt her constituents, and destroy San Diego’s vitality.
