Labor unions are lining up and down the block to endorse Assemblyman Todd Gloria for mayor of San Diego. Unfortunately for Gloria, this reveals less about his quality as a candidate and more about where his priorities truly lie—namely, with the interests of big labor and not with the needs of San Diegans.
Gloria stated that the endorsement “doesn’t mean [he’ll] always vote for labor,” but it’s certainly clear where his loyalties lie. The endorsement was no small accomplishment. In fact, it was from the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council, which consists of more than 100 unions from across the region. Gloria has already conceded that “It’s difficult to not stand with them,” though he claims to make his best attempts to look at their demands critically.
The unions need Gloria’s support for various pieces of Sacramento legislation before his term expires, and this endorsement is clearly another incentive for him to continue supporting labor unions. These loyalties will undoubtedly carry over to his potential mayorship, trapping people under the jurisdiction of another politician who puts money over everything else.
