San Diego is thankfully seeing real solutions to combat the alarming and pervasive homelessness epidemic. The City of San Diego Community Action Plan on Homelessness was recently unanimously approved, aimed at providing a roadmap to combat the issue through community involvement.
Homelessness affects all San Diegans. We need to remember that the homeless are not alien to our streets—they are our neighbors, family members, and far too often, veterans. They deserve basic respect, just like the rest of us, and have been denied that respect and humanity for far too long. Thankfully, a new wave of hope is crashing down over our coastal city as Republicans initiate big steps to combat homelessness.
The newfound interest in homelessness relief isn’t as emergent as it would appear—citizens have been calling for actions such as the Community Plan for years, which have not been followed by meaningful action until recently. Mayor Kevin Faulconer has made his stance on helping the homeless abundantly clear, and it’s apparent that this is what the people want. We’re building on the momentum generated by Faulconer’s policies in order to create change for the better.
Republicans leaders should continue to take the steps necessary to combat this issue, regardless of Democratic objection and stalling. When we’ve been left without a solution from Democrats for so long, tangible changes are an absolute necessity for the sake of all San Diegans.
