Two of the largest local Jewish organizations have recently partnered in creating a nationwide funding initiative to support Holocaust survivors struggling with poverty or financial despair. The Jewish Federation of San Diego County and Jewish Family Service of San Diego announced on Friday that they are teaming up with the Survivors of the Holocaust Emergency Fund, which was originally launched in March by Seed the Dream Foundation and Kavod.
The fund is supported by prominent Jewish organizations in 11 other major cities throughout the country. The fund aims to aid those in need of rent support, home repair, and medical care. The organizations are aiming to raise $3.5 million through dollar-for-dollar matching with donors.
Aside from financial support, these foundations have developed a national hotline for survivors that allows them to connect with regional support. Holocaust survivors in need of emotional or financial support can call 720-295-8484 for further assistance.
These initiatives have been taken due to the alarming rate of despondency within the Holocaust survivor population. According to the foundations, more than 80,000 survivors in the U.S. live near the financial poverty line.
Jewish Federation of San Diego County President and CEO Michael Jeser said, “With the support of KAVOD and Seed the Dream Foundation, our San Diego Jewish community is going to be able to make significant strides in response to emergency needs of survivors. Collectively, we will make an even greater difference in the lives of those who have given so much.”
