Chula Vista Mayor McCann to Participate in Career Exploration Day for Local High School Students
On Wednesday, October 25, 2023, sixty students from Chula Vista Learning Community Charter high school are set to engage in a hands-on learning experience at the AGC Apprenticeship & Training center in Lakeside. The event, organized by WorkforceConnect in collaboration with Junior Achievement of San Diego, Associated General Contractors Apprenticeship Training, and the charter school, aims to provide real-world experience in construction and drone technology.
Amidst the national discourse on college affordability and student debt, this Career Exploration Day offers a practical look at alternative, well-paying career paths available to students. From 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., participants will cycle through 30-minute workshops, gaining insights into various aspects of the construction industry including drone technology, heavy equipment simulation, framing, plumbing, and electrical work.
Chula Vista Mayor John McCann is scheduled to attend, marking his support for initiatives that offer viable career alternatives and paid training opportunities to the city’s youth. The mayor’s participation underscores his commitment to fostering educational and career development opportunities that align with the evolving job market.
This event highlights the community’s collective effort to provide students, particularly from underserved communities, with knowledge and skills that go beyond traditional classroom learning. The hands-on experience is designed to showcase the breadth of opportunities available in the construction industry, many of which come with the benefit of on-the-job paid training.
