Initially, experts predicted it would take months for the freeway to be rebuilt. However, Governor Josh Shapiro <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/biden-interstate-95-road-collapse-philadelphia-4ccd7455f02e48f62357975b24d78462\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0that\u00a0he expected temporary lanes to be finished within two weeks of the explosion thanks to the\u00a024\/7\u00a0work of crews at the site. While all Americans should be happy Pennsylvanian\u2019s traffic nightmare will soon be solved, we must ask why it takes an emergency to see construction expedited in America?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The swift construction we witness after emergencies, when federal and state regulations are eased and rolled back, should not be the exception to the rule in America, it should be the norm.\u00a0As anyone who currently transits Interstate 15 between Fallbrook and Escondido can attest, construction projects take forever in California. Projects seem to take longer and longer every year. It has not been this way historically in the US or in other parts of the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ztQ8Oj2fSB0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European countries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and China build tunnels in hours, not years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1930-31, The Empire State building was built in\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ztQ8Oj2fSB0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">405<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, Americans have grown accustomed to slow, bloated and inefficient infrastructure work. A recent VICE article compared and contrasted French and American infrastructure projects. A $38 billion Parisian project started in 2015 and is projected to finish in 2030 and will transform the city\u2019s rail system. According to the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/k7b5mn\/a-dollar100-billion-lesson-in-why-building-public-transportation-is-so-expensive-in-the-us\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the project \u201cwill fund 68 new stations, four new lines and two existing lines.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In America, a similar project in the Northeast corridor that will convert a 100-mile section of track to high speed rail is projected to cost over $100 billion dollars. The project does not even include building a new station or line and is scheduled to be completed in 2035.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a sad day when the French (unless it involves croissants or baguettes) beat us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reason we don\u2019t build as much anymore is not because of the American people. The American workforce today remains as trained and hard-working as ever before, as we\u2019ve seen in Philadelphia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The regulatory environment, and those who created it, should shoulder the blame. Congress can keep passing huge infrastructure bills, but it will not much matter until government at all levels alleviates the massive regulatory burden that paralyzes America\u2019s ability to build fast and efficiently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limited<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0regulation is necessary to protect workers and consumers.\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0regulation costs everyday citizens money, time and opportunity. Californians see this all the time locally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We chronically suffer from water, electricity, home and transportation shortages. The ruling Democratic Party constantly makes excuses.\u00a0But it fails to dawn on them that Democratic policies themselves create the red tape and crippling regulation that continue to fuel delay and pot-holed policies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Taylor Swift might put it \u201cit\u2019s them. They\u2019re the problem, it\u2019s them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Granted, Democrats view the government as a tool to impose the sort of rules they think will benefit the people.\u00a0While they champion such suggestions, the reality festers in unfulfilled promises, worse standards of living, and misplaced priorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive regulations only hurt the people they are trying to help. They actually\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/save-salmon-us-approves-largest-dam-removal-history-2022-11-17\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prevent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0solutions to our water and electricity crisis in California. They prevent building new desalination and next generation nuclear power plants. The costs of regulation get passed onto the consumer, and it\u2019s natural California citizens and their companies will move out of state\u2013as\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/newsletters\/whatmatters\/2023\/02\/california-population-exodus-housing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">500,000 did in the last three years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013to find a more accommodating place to live and do business. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In San Diego,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/news\/transportation\/story\/2022-10-17\/work-will-start-in-april-on-long-awaited-widening-of-state-route-56\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a quarter of the cost<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0of a relatively small expansion of state Route 56 will be spent on complying with environmental regulations. $11 million of the $39 million budget will be spent just for environmental analysis before a shovel even hits dirt. How much analysis must be done when the new lanes will be built on existing medians?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The California Democratic Party wastes so much time,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/newsletters\/whatmatters\/2023\/05\/california-budget-deficit-winners-losers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">money<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and effort on the politics of radical social crusades and special interests that it fails to deliver the basic functions of good governance. Governor Newsom\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.courthousenews.com\/newsom-touts-plan-to-cut-red-tape-and-speed-up-green-infrastructure-projects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent efforts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0to cut red tape to build his favored clean energy projects should be extended to all construction projects in California, not just projects he is ideologically aligned with.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Americans and Californians yearn for basic government competence. Deregulation will not focus solely on benefiting corporations. More importantly, it will empower citizens to solve the problems of their communities without bureaucrats, politicians and their red tape getting in their way.
