{"id":9322,"date":"2023-03-03T10:24:49","date_gmt":"2023-03-03T17:24:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=9322"},"modified":"2023-03-03T10:24:49","modified_gmt":"2023-03-03T17:24:49","slug":"reform-ca-calls-for-resignation-of-ca-public-utility-commissioners-woke-and-incompetent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=9322","title":{"rendered":"Reform CA Calls for Resignation of CA Public Utility Commissioners: &#8220;Woke and Incompetent&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The original article can be read <a href=\"https:\/\/reformcalifornia.org\/news\/reform-ca-calls-for-resignation-of-ca-public-utility-commissioners-woke-and-incompetent?utm_source=sfmc&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Reform+CA+News+-+March+3+2023\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"heading-18-copy\">As Californians are getting crushed by skyrocketing electric and gas utility rates, a review of the qualifications of the five state Public Utility Commission members shows none of them have any utility management experience.<\/h4>\n<div class=\"rich-text-block-4 w-richtext\">\n<p>Many Californians have been shocked to see their utility bills double \u2014 or even\u00a0<em>triple<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 in 2023 compared to the same time last year &#8211; and now many are rightfully asking who is supposed to be overseeing the utility companies and their rates?<\/p>\n<p>Under state law, utility company operations, profits, and rates are all regulated and approved by the five politician-appointed members of the California Public Utilities Commission.<\/p>\n<p>A recent examination of the Commissioners\u2019 qualifications, however, reveals that California politicians appointed five members who have absolutely no experience in utility management.<\/p>\n<p>That bombshell revelation is now prompting Reform California to call for the immediate resignation or removal of all five Commissioners.<\/p>\n<p>That bombshell revelation is now prompting Reform California\u2019s Carl DeMaio to demand the immediate resignation or removal of all five Commissioners so qualified replacements can be appointed to protect Californians against spiking utility rates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo wonder California\u2019s utility rates are skyrocketing &#8211; all five of our supposed utility commissioners are completely incompetent,\u201d DeMaio says.<\/p>\n<p>DeMaio says having qualified state utility commissioners is crucial to protecting ratepayers from unfair gas and electric rates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalifornia\u2019s utility rates are not set by private utilities \u2014 they are set by the CPUC as appointees of state politicians,\u201d said DeMaio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need all five Commissioners to have extensive financial and managerial experience in utility operations &#8211; and absolutely none of them do,\u201d DeMaio notes.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the five appointees of the California Public Utilities Commission and their qualifications:<\/p>\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li><strong>Karen Douglas:<\/strong>\u00a0A former political staffer and environmental lawyer with no background in utilities;<\/li>\n<li><strong>John Reynolds:<\/strong>\u00a0A former political staffer and environmental lawyer, who served in a variety of government staff positions but never once worked for a utility;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Darcie Houck:<\/strong>\u00a0A former political staffer and lawyer with expertise in environmental equity and community development, but no utility experience;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alice Reynolds:<\/strong>\u00a0A former political staffer, environmental lawyer, and CalEPA Executive who worked for Governor Jerry Brown and has no utility experience;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Genevieve Shiroma:<\/strong>\u00a0A politician and air quality engineer who only served as a Sacramento Municipal Utility District director because she ran for the position based on her environmental advocacy and not on her experience in the utility industry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cIt is clear that these Commissioners are completely disinterested in keeping rates low for Californians and instead are advancing a costly environmental activism agenda,\u201d DeMaio warns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe commission should be regulating utilities to cap profits and reduce costs \u2014 but as environmental activists all they are doing is imposing environmental regulations recklessly,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>According to a new study by the non-partisan Transparency Foundation, which analyzed the utility rate cases approved by the CPUC, Californians are paying 67.1% more for electricity and 30.1% more for natural gas than the national average in 2022 \u2014 and that was before additional recent price spikes.<\/p>\n<p>The report traced the reason for California\u2019s higher utility rates to over $4.5 billion in \u201chidden state taxes\u201d approved by these five incompetent commissioners to primarily fund government environmental programs that they support. The five commissioners also supported costly climate change regulations on the utilities.<\/p>\n<p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/reformcalifornia.org\/videos\/your-utility-bill-will-triple-if-this-happens\"><em>WATCH: Check out the episode of Reform California with Carl DeMaio where Carl breaks down this data in depth!<\/em><\/a><em>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cShame on the liberal media for not vetting these activists, who now have 6-year terms and are being paid over $220,000 a year to fail the taxpayer,\u201d said DeMaio.<\/p>\n<p>DeMaio says there is a way to course-correct: the California Legislature may remove a commissioner by a two-thirds vote for \u2018incompetence,\u2019 provided by the California Constitution, Article 12, Section 1.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only should we remove these reckless and incompetent commissioners, but we should pass a law which mandates that commissioners must have experience in utility management and rate payer advocacy going forward,\u201d said DeMaio.<\/p>\n<p>DeMaio and Reform California have launched a campaign to fight the recent utility rate increases \u2014 and stop state regulators from authorizing a new round of rate hikes.
