San Diego County Board of Supervisors Chair Nora Vargas recently visited the KUSI News studio for an in-depth discussion on various issues facing San Diego County. However, during the interview, Vargas made some concerning statements regarding the possibility of a mileage tax or road user charge.<\/p>\n

Vargas initially claimed that there would be no road user charge in the 2025 plan proposed by the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG). However, she added that if state mandates were implemented, voters would have to make that decision. This statement suggests that Vargas may be looking for ways to implement a mileage tax or road user charge without letting voters decide.<\/p>\n

This is deeply troubling, as it shows a blatant disregard for the democratic process and a willingness to lie until a way is found to implement this tax. It is unacceptable for Vargas or any elected official to deceive the public and attempt to push through unpopular policies without allowing voters to have a say.<\/p>\n

Vargas’ attempt to mislead the public about the possibility of a mileage tax or road user charge is particularly egregious given the current economic climate. Many individuals and families in San Diego County are struggling financially, and the last thing they need is another tax that could further burden them.<\/p>\n

Constituients should condemn this behavior and hold our elected officials accountable. We must demand transparency and honesty from our leaders, and we must ensure that the democratic process is respected and upheld. We urge Supervisor Vargas to reconsider her position on this issue and to prioritize the needs and interests of the people of San Diego County over any personal or political agenda.<\/p>\n

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) \u2013 Chair of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, and Chair of SANDAG, Nora Vargas, visited the KUSI News studio for a live in-depth discussion on all the issues facing San Diego County.<\/p>\n

KUSI\u2019s Lauren Phinney began the interview questioning Vargas on issues and decisions made at the Board of Supervisors, including homelessness, landlord regulations and evictions, and California\u2019s prostitution crisis and the push to repeal SB 357.<\/p>\n

Phinney asked Vargas about law enforcement\u2019s role in the homeless crisis, since there is clear criminal activity occurring within the encampments. Phinney asked, \u201care you willing to say that law enforcement will be part of that approach to solve that issue?\u201d<\/p>\n

Vargas responded, \u201cI think it\u2019s really important to emphasize that for the first time in decades, the county of San Diego is actually doing something about homelessness and the amount of housing shortage that we\u2019ve had.\u201d Continuing, \u201cfor decades this wasn\u2019t really a priority for the county of San Diego, but this new Board has made it a priority for us. It\u2019s going to take law enforcement, it\u2019s going to take ensuring we have resources around substance abuse. It\u2019s going to take us making sure we continue to invest dollars on mental healthcare. It\u2019s going to take us continuing to work closely with the small business community to make sure that we\u2019re addressing these issues head on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Concluding, \u201cthe economy has really hit people hard, so we are going to continue doing everything we can to make sure people are getting everything they need.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phinney then pointed out there is a portion of the homeless population that does not want help from the county, but Vargas dodged the question, refusing to acknowledge there is a portion of the homeless population that is endangering San Diegans.<\/p>\n

KUSI\u2019s Paul Rudy questioned Vargas for the second half of the interview, where he focused on her position as Chair of SANDAG.<\/p>\n

Rudy began his questioning by referencing Vargas\u2019 tweet (below), where she simultaneously told voters a Mileage Tax cannot be implemented by a government agency without voter approval, while also calling SANDAG\u2019s proposed mileage tax a \u201cRoad User Charge.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rudy asked if SANDAG would use the \u201cRoad User Charge\u201d as a way around getting voter approval. In response, Vargas asserted, \u201cthere will be no road user charge in the regional plan.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vargas continued, \u201cthere is not going to be a road user charge in the 2025 plan, and I have direct staff at SANDAG, so that there is no road user charge. There really is no debate about it, if and when, right, this is not the time for a road user charge in our region.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the next thing Vargas said may be foreshadowing what\u2019s to come. She continued her answer saying, \u201cif and when state mandates, that happen, voters will have to make that decision.\u201d Adding that \u201cthere are pilot programs across the state that are taking place right now, and those decisions and that information is going to come back. I think what I want to make sure on the record, our community hears from me first hand, there is no road user charge that is going to be implemented.\u201d<\/p>\n

SANDAG is working on this and will submit the amendment to the state. They will make the final decision.<\/p>\n

TO BE CLEAR, no gov. agency has the authority to implement a tax that would impact our region without voter approval.<\/p>\n
