Here\u2019s why.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Jennifer De La O, a \u00a0U.S. Customs and Border Protection field operations director in San Diego, said in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DFOSanDiegoCA\/status\/1615521977611046913?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tweet<\/a>\u00a0this week that her office \u201chas recently noticed an increase in the number of eggs intercepted at our ports.\u201d Failure to declare agricultural items while entering the U.S. can carry fines of up to $10,000, she added.<\/p>\n<p>Federal law prohibits travelers from bringing certain agriculture products \u2014 including eggs, as well as live chickens and turkeys \u2014 into the U.S. \u201cbecause they may carry plant pests and foreign animal diseases,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/travel\/us-citizens\/know-before-you-go\/prohibited-and-restricted-items\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a>\u00a0to customs rules. Eggs from Mexico have been banned from entering the U.S. since 2012,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/aphis\/resources\/traveler\/intl-travel\/milk-dairy-eggs\/milk-dairy-eggs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a>\u00a0to the USDA. Cooked eggs are allowable under USDA guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>The number of incidents in which raw eggs were confiscated at U.S. borders jumped more than 100% during the final three months of 2022 compared to the same period a year ago,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.borderreport.com\/immigration\/border-crime\/egg-seizures-up-at-border-crossings-as-prices-soar-in-u-s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a>\u00a0to Border Report, an online news site focused on immigration issues. The price for a 30-count carton of eggs in Ciudad Ju\u00e1rez, Mexico, is $3.40, according to Border Report.<\/p>\n<p>Egg prices in the U.S. have surged to an average of $4.25 a dozen, up from roughly $1.79 a year ago, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/series\/APU0000708111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">data<\/a>\u00a0from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. The cost of processed eggs \u2014 used in liquid or powdered form in manufactured products including salad dressing, cake mix and chips \u2014 has also risen.<\/p>\n<p>Those price increases are being driven by growing consumer demand along with a decrease in domestic egg supplies caused by an avian\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/egg-prices-mexico-border-us-customs\/\">flu<\/a>\u00a0epidemic that has devastated U.S. poultry flocks.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/aphis\/ourfocus\/animalhealth\/animal-disease-information\/avian\/avian-influenza\/hpai-2022\/2022-hpai-commercial-backyard-flocks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">58 million<\/a>\u00a0birds have been infected with the disease, while more than 43 million egg-laying hens have been slaughtered, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, making it the deadliest avian flu outbreak in American history. USDA officials are investigating what caused the outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>People entering the U.S. must declare eggs at the border, Charles Payne, supervisory agriculture specialist at U.S. Customs in El Paso, Texas, told Border Report.
