Chicago is a killing field.\u00a0 Every week the death count mounts, as do the injuries and purely material losses.\u00a0 Held to blame?\u00a0 The gangs, an ineffectual mayor, and a thoroughly demoralized police force.<\/span><\/p>\n

School shootings and the slaughter of innocents:\u00a0 Columbine, Sandy Hook, and now Uvalde.\u00a0 A young man accosts a young mother pushing a stroller and shoots a round into the infant\u2019s face.\u00a0 An honor student shot then lit on fire.\u00a0 Random mass shootings wherever a young crowd gathers.\u00a0 Crimes no one believed possible fifty years ago.\u00a0 Held to blame?\u00a0 Guns, video games and rap music.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rape, theft and vandalism.\u00a0 Nothing is safe or off-limits.\u00a0 The murder of a store clerk for a six-pack of beer.\u00a0 An old woman thrown downstairs.\u00a0 An Asian woman tossed in front of a train.\u00a0 The toppling of statues and attacks on any who object to same.\u00a0 Smash-and-grab robberies on a grand scale, sometimes for high-end merchandize, sometimes for whatever is on the shelf.\u00a0 Another old woman splashed with paint when she dares to object to a teenage vandal.\u00a0 Held to blame?\u00a0 Police brutality and white privilege and the need for vengeance and reparations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Common to all of the above?\u00a0 The perpetrators of these crimes are almost always young and male.\u00a0 Some are very young, barely into their teens; some are older but have a rap sheet dating back to their teens.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Almost all come from broken homes, dysfunctional families and\/or a general lack of familial discipline.\u00a0 Too, they\u2019re not getting help from their schools or churches anymore.\u00a0 Society says it\u2019s wrong to make moral judgments or mess with another\u2019s so-called truth. \u00a0 All virtue is relative.\u00a0 The simple concept of virtue is now disrespected as a form of toxic whiteness\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2026Occasionally, African game keepers encounter horrendous scenes of murder and mayhem directed against their charges.\u00a0 Herd animals slaughtered and beaten to a pulp with no sign of actual predation.\u00a0 No sign, either, of that human bane, poaching: valuable pelts are shredded, and the even more valuable rhino horn left unharvested.\u00a0 Just dead animals.\u00a0 Many of them, killed, for no apparent reason.<\/span><\/p>\n

The keepers know the culprit.\u00a0 They even have a word for it:\u00a0 musth.\u00a0 Young male elephants no longer subject to the discipline of their maternal herds turn violent without the immediate supervision and intervention of adult males.\u00a0 These teenaged elephants attack virtually anything including tourist buses.\u00a0 These young males will even rape female rhinos, leaving them crushed and broken.\u00a0 Animal behaviorists now blame raging adolescent hormones unchecked by any restraints \u2013 either physical or social.\u00a0 Only the introduction of older, fully mature males into this environment stops these behaviors and appears to stop them cold as the teenage males are introduced to what is acceptable and expected of them by those they respect and can trust.<\/span><\/p>\n

Is there not a parallel here?<\/span><\/p>\n

Over a generation ago, Senator Patrick Moynihan (D-NY) counselled against welfare reforms that essentially removed poor men from their families.\u00a0 Such reforms and changing social norms promoting victimhood and permissiveness have directly rebounded on our kids \u2013 both victims and perpetrators \u2013 all victims to a system that promotes hate, envy, anger, and a sense of entitlement \u2013 a jungle morality.\u00a0 Kill or be killed.\u00a0 Survival of the fittest (the cruelest, the quickest to recognize and react against any perceived slight).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is what we\u2019ve given our kids.\u00a0 Can we not now resolve to save them?\u00a0 And us? \u2013Mary Anne Wentink<\/span><\/p>\n
