{"id":8645,"date":"2022-04-28T17:11:08","date_gmt":"2022-04-29T00:11:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=8645"},"modified":"2022-04-28T16:15:15","modified_gmt":"2022-04-28T23:15:15","slug":"6-million-californians-face-water-shutoffs-in-conservation-effort","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=8645","title":{"rendered":"6 million Californians Face Water Shutoffs in Conservation Effort"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Written by Brock Johnson<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Southern California gets hit harder and harder by droughts, extreme water limits have been implemented in multiple major regions. 6 million Southern California residents who live in regions that are supplied water from Northern California reservoirs have been <a href=\"https:\/\/mwdh2o.legistar.com\/View.ashx?M=F&amp;ID=10838150&amp;GUID=3EAF5D95-F527-4B68-9168-D5E14E5C6A0D\">ordered to reduce their water usage or receive a $2,000 fine per acre-foot of water that exceeds the monthly allocation limit.\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metropolitan Water District General Manager, Adel Hagekhalil, said \u201cAt this time, a third of our region, 6 million Southern Californians in parts of Los Angeles, Ventura, San Bernardino counties, face a very real and immediate water stress challenge \u2026 Today these areas rely on extremely limited supplies from Northern California. And there is not enough supply available to meet the normal demands in these areas.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though Californians have heard about droughts for decades, the average per-person use of water has steadily increased over the past few years. Experts say that conservation efforts in the past have not worked as well as expected because the restrictions have been mostly voluntary.\u00a0 The suggested outdoor watering use of one day a week would be a significant change for the arid, densely populated regions of Southern California.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Councilmember Peter Kraut, from the San Fernando Valley city of Calabasas, told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mwdh2o.com\/board\/board-of-directors\/#1010\">Metropolitan board<\/a> \u201cI\u2019m appalled that a change this drastic is happening in such a short period of time \u2026 This plan will result not just in brown grass but in killing countless trees.
