{"id":8640,"date":"2022-04-28T17:23:54","date_gmt":"2022-04-29T00:23:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=8640"},"modified":"2022-04-28T13:34:31","modified_gmt":"2022-04-28T20:34:31","slug":"uc-system-may-do-away-with-letter-grading","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=8640","title":{"rendered":"UC System May Do Away With Letter Grading"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Written by Sasha Reva<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/regents.universityofcalifornia.edu\/regmeet\/mar22\/a3.pdf\">The idea of ditching the A-F grading system in University of California academic departments and colleges is becoming more and more popular<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schools such as UC Berkeley and UC Davis are thinking about whether to use a grading system such as pass or no-pass grade instead of the letter grade. This means that it will allow students to choose which assignments get the most weight in determining their grades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experimentation with this is also happening in departments at other UC campuses on how they test students, putting less priority on exams because some students aren\u2019t good test takers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/citl.ucsc.edu\/\">Jody Greene, who is the associate vice provost of teaching at UC Santa Cruz<\/a> said, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe changes that were happening in higher education at a glacial pace were put on a bullet train by Covid, and as painful as the last couple of years have been, we\u2019re now having genuine conversations about how we can better <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serve the students.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> critics argue that having too many classes as pass\/no pass could have a negative impact on students who are hoping to attend graduate school. However, Greene said that until about 2001 UC <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Santa Cruz did not assign grades at all and still sent many students to graduate school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of now, schools are still bringing the agenda of equality and race due to the 2020s Black Lives Matter demonstrations because of the murder of George Floyd. \u201cNow faculty are starting to have real conversations about race and racism,\u201d Executive\u00a0 Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ceils.ucla.edu\/\">UCLA Center for Education Innovation &amp; Learning in the Sciences<\/a> Rachel Kennison said. Schools are required to take <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ethnic studies classes such as Black perspectives and equity between the students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you think about students as individuals, they don\u2019t learn in any one way. They need multiple modes of learning and multiple modes of being assessed\u201d said Kennison.\u00a0 \u201cIdeally you are giving them lots of different types of assessments, making lots of different opportunities for them to assess their own learning right in low stakes ways.
