In the picture, Newsom was reading Toni Morrison\u2019s \u201cBeloved\u201d which has been banned in some schools due to its graphic nature. In the stack of books next to him was \u201cTo Kill a Mockingbird\u201d, \u201c1984\u201d, and \u201cMaus\u201d. However, many noticed that one of those books has been banned in a California school.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTo\u00a0 Kill a Mockingbird\u201d was recently banned in September 2020 by Burbank Unified School District in Los Angeles. It wasn\u2019t just \u201cTo Kill a Mockingbird\u201d that was banned by that district, also banned were \u201cThe Adventures of Huckleberry Finn\u201d, \u201cOf Mice and Men\u201d, \u201cThe Cay\u201d, and \u201cRoll My Thunder, Hear My Cry\u201d. The district banned the books after complaints from Black parents over racial slurs in those books. The move was heavily opposed by groups like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PENamerica\/status\/1316384383922835457?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1316384383922835457%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mercurynews.com%2F2022%2F03%2F31%2Fnewsom-jabs-red-states-for-banning-book-pulled-in-california\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PEN America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who gathered 890 signatures to reverse the ban.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the tweet by Newsom, many criticized his photo since it included a book banned in his state. Christina Pushaw, Press Secretary to Florida Governor Ron Desantis, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChristinaPushaw\/status\/1509347842984448011?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1509347842984448011%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mercurynews.com%2F2022%2F03%2F31%2Fnewsom-jabs-red-states-for-banning-book-pulled-in-california\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted out a criticism of Newsom<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cThe woke progressives in California (Newsom voters) banned To Kill A Mockingbird for \u201canti racism\u201d purposes\u201d.
