{"id":8493,"date":"2022-03-30T12:50:03","date_gmt":"2022-03-30T19:50:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=8493"},"modified":"2022-03-30T12:50:03","modified_gmt":"2022-03-30T19:50:03","slug":"state-task-force-moves-to-limit-eligibility-for-reparations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=8493","title":{"rendered":"State Task Force Moves to Limit Eligibility For Reparations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California was the first state in the nation to open up <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/california-divide\/2021\/06\/california-reparations-committee-direct-payment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a task force to look into reparations for descendants of slaves.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The task force was passed two years ago and was<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201920200AB3121\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> authored by former San Diego Assemblywoman Shirley Weber<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who is now the California Secretary of State. The bill was signed into law by Gavin Newsom which gave \u201cspecial consideration\u201d to Black Californians who are descendants of slaves. Now, the eligibility has been somewhat slimmed down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After about six hours of deliberation and debate, the task force voted 5-4 to limit eligibility for benefits to those who can prove that they are a direct descendant of an enslaved individual or a free Black person living in the U.S before the end of the 19th century. An estimated 2.6 million Black Californians would therefore be eligible for benefits or reparations which could come in the form of a cash payout.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/california-divide\/2022\/03\/california-reparations-task-force-eligibility\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The debate over eligibility was reportedly very heated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Task force member Cheryl Grills said that excluding some Black Californians was, \u201canother win for white supremacy\u201d. Task force chairwoman Kamilah Moore said in response that not going with a lineage-based approach would, \u201caggrieve the victims of slavery.\u201d The task force was also briefed by around 10 genealogists on the significance of lineage-based model and how people can trace their lineage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The task force has also discussed the effect of Jim Crow laws, redlining, police brutality, and many other issues that affected Black Californians.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>California was the first state in the nation to open up a task force to look into reparations for descendants of slaves.
