Gavin Newsom and California\u2019s democratic legislature have been getting backlash from their constituents due to the April 1st expiration of the state&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/housing\/2021\/09\/california-eviction-moratorium-rent-relief\/\">COVID rent relief program<\/a>. Progressive advocates have been asking the Governor to extend the state\u2019s eviction protections indefinitely past April 1st.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the rent relief program ends, landlords will be allowed to move non-paying tenants out, even if tenants are waiting for the state\u2019s response to their relief applications \u2014 a recent report from the California State Auditor found that only<a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/housing\/2022\/03\/california-rent-relief-wait\/\"> 16% of the nearly half a million renters who applied for state money had been paid by early March.<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/newsletters\/whatmatters\/2022\/03\/covid-relief-california\/\">In an email sent to CalMatters staff<\/a>, Nick Kasuar \u2014 the communications manager for the state Housing and Community Development Department \u2014 stated that, \u201cThis is an emergency program designed to address the specific need that resulted from the pandemic.\u201d But progressive housing advocates want the program to remain in place in order to \u201cstop the eviction tsunami.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The acting State Auditor Michael Tilden also found that the state\u2019s surplus hasn\u2019t been directed toward fixing the housing crisis, as 1.4 million low-income households didn\u2019t find affordable housing last year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/auditor.ca.gov\/reports\/2021-114\/index.html\">Tilden mentioned in his report<\/a>, \u201cThe state\u2019s need for affordable housing is significantly outpacing its production, which is negatively affecting California&#8217;s\u2026 High housing costs often result in families becoming behind on their rent and going without food, utilities, or health care. Further, a lack of affordable housing correlates with a significant increase in the number of people experiencing homelessness.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The City of Los Angeles had its first mayoral debate Tuesday, where candidates argued passionately on the issue of homelessness.
