{"id":8271,"date":"2022-02-22T17:01:17","date_gmt":"2022-02-23T00:01:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=8271"},"modified":"2022-02-22T17:01:17","modified_gmt":"2022-02-23T00:01:17","slug":"uc-and-csu-systems-under-a-number-of-controversies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=8271","title":{"rendered":"UC and CSU Systems Under a Number of Controversies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Written by William Hekman<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both the University of California system and California State University system have been under some recent controversies this year, ranging from student loans, housing, and sexual assault.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Amicus-Letter-to-Supreme-Court.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Governor Newsom submitted an amicus brief<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the California Supreme Court, urging the court to stop a recent decision that could force <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/education\/higher-education\/2022\/02\/uc-berkeley-admissions-cuts-prioritize-californians\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UC Berkeley to cut 3,000 students from fall enrollment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2022\/02\/18\/governor-newsom-files-amicus-brief-in-uc-berkeley-enrollment-case-arguing-for-college-access-and-affordability\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newsom said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cWe can\u2019t let a lawsuit get in the way of the education and dreams of thousands of students who are our future leaders and innovators\u201d. The Alameda Superior Court previously ruled on a capped enrollment after the citizens of Berkley sued the university. They said that the growth in students was taking a toll on city services leading to scarcity in housing and noise. The court of appeals also rejected UC Berkeley\u2019s request to undo the ruling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student housing has also been a hot issue in California universities. California universities do not have enough housing to support students. This has forced many students to find alternative housing options. State Senator Scott Wiener introduced a bill that would allow campus housing to be exempt from the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/opr.ca.gov\/ceqa\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> California Environmental Quality Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Sacramento is also considering a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/education\/2022\/01\/student-housing-2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$7 billion loan for campuses short of housing to build new housing.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Senator Wiener said, \u201c Students \u2014 who are simply trying to go to school and learn \u2014 should not be forced to live in their cars because colleges can\u2019t provide enough housing for them\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The biggest controversy has been the recent resignation of Cal State Chancellor Joseph Castro. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/2022\/02\/csu-chancellor-resigns-over-mishandling-sexual-misconduct-complaints-two-weeks-after-investigation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Castro resigned after it was revealed he mishandled sexual assault allegations while at Fresno State<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
