{"id":8045,"date":"2022-01-26T15:46:58","date_gmt":"2022-01-26T22:46:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=8045"},"modified":"2022-01-26T16:25:38","modified_gmt":"2022-01-26T23:25:38","slug":"board-of-supervisors-gives-go-ahead-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=8045","title":{"rendered":"Board of Supervisors Gives Go Ahead On Response to Possible Officer Shortage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Written by Sasha Reva<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yesterday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegocounty.gov\/general\/bos.html\">County supervisors<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> voted unanimously to create plans to address Sheriff\u2019s Department staffing shortages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This comes just a day after <a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/2022\/01\/san-diego-county-supervisors-joel-anderson-and-jim-desmond-address-possible-shortage-of-officers\/\">Supervisors Joel Anderson and Jim Desmond sent a letter to their board colleagues regarding the possible shortage of officers<\/a>. In their letter they said, \u201cSome of these officers and deputies are now at risk of losing their jobs due to government-mandated vaccination requirements.\u201d They also requested <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helen Robbins-Meyer, chief administrative officer,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to return within 180 days with updates and recommendations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to data cited in the letter from Anderson and Desmond, applications to the Sheriff\u2019s Department have decreased 25% during the past year, and decreased 36% between 2018 and 2021. The numbers of crimes are rising extremely fast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s so important those deputies are there for us when we need them most,\u201d Anderson said. \u201cThese brave men and women have put themselves in harm\u2019s way and now are looking at staffing shortages, which will lead to burnout,\u201d Desmond added. \u201cWe must make sure they have all the tools to help them succeed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public Safety is No. 1 priority for the government and since we have a huge rise in crime, \u201cit is imperative that San Diego County have the necessary public safety officers,\u201d Desmond said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vargas said the board letter was \u201ca little premature,\u201d even though she voted yes on Item 17. \u201cOur Sheriff\u2019s Department has been under scrutiny, and rightfully so,\u201d Vargas said. She believes that we need big changes in<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> criminal justice and policing systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vargas also said that the new sheriff should be the one to dictate the department&#8217;s mission.
