However, the potential benefits of investing in transportation infrastructure will not outweigh the financial inconvenience that SANDAG\u2019s plan forces on taxpayers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s trying to fit a square peg into a round hole, and unfortunately it\u2019s coming at great expense to our taxpayers,\u201d said Bailey.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to fund the plan, the city will now charge additional Uber &amp; Lyft fees, increase sales tax, and lastly implement the controversial \u201croad usage charge\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s not like we haven\u2019t spent any money on public transit,\u201d said Bailey \u201cOver the past 20 years we\u2019ve spent 55% of all local transportation dollars on public transit, and yet we continue to see the share of transit commutes actually fall.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, public transit in San Diego is fundamentally different from high-density cities like New York, Chicago, and Paris. Mayor Bailey tested out the current public transportation system by traveling from Coronado to the UTC area. Normally, a drive of that length would only take 22 minutes, but the commute took Bailey and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KUSINews\/status\/1486137948181438469?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1486137948181438469%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.kusi.com%2Fcoronado-mayor-richard-bailey-public-transit-is-not-an-efficient-way-to-travel-in-san-diego-county%2F\">KUSI News<\/a> one hour and 44 minutes by bus and trolley.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This experiment demonstrates the inefficiency of San Diego\u2019s public transportation system compared to simply travelling by car. For workers and students looking to get from A to B, public transportation is clearly not a preferable option.
