California schools have been open because of, not despite of, our priority on safety<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newsom stated December 22, but in spite of this Bay Area schools are still closing in response to omicron. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This new variant of COVID-19 is the latest as the U.S. enters its third year living with this virus. Omicron cases are now the predominant strain of COVID-19 and cases are spiking as the country is reporting about 400,000 new cases a day. Despite this spike, deaths due to the virus remain particularly low and have \u201cbarely budged\u201d over the last 5 weeks. Statistics that caused<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/allinwithchris\/status\/1476362129229983745\"> Chris Hayes from MSNBC to compare this strain to something akin to the flu.<\/a> He followed up in a tweet saying \u201cThe flu can still be dangerous-but we do not reorient our lives around the flu.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/coronavirus-covid19\/2022\/1\/4\/22864934\/covid-19-us-omicron-cases-hospitalizations-deaths-2022\">John Hopkins University released data from South Africa,<\/a> Omicron\u2019s origin, showing that as cases were spiking, fatal cases began to hit an all time low.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite what should be good news,<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WCCUSD\/status\/1479121261703876608?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1479121261703876608%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.foxnews.com%2Fus%2Fnewsom-schools-bay-area-district-closing-omicron\"> West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) is delaying opening schools<\/a> citing Omicron as the cause. &#8220;In our district, we are seeing far more staff absences than usual because of the virus, and we also have an increased number of students testing positive for COVID-19 as we return from winter break,&#8221; Superintendent Kenneth Chris Hurst said in a statement. The \u201cstrain\u201d this was causing on the schools will lead to what are called \u201csmoke days\u201d in order to allow any who are sick to heal and \u201calleviate some of the pressure\u201d on schools. Students have already suffered immensely in California as schools remained closed for over a year.
