{"id":7235,"date":"2021-10-07T16:36:44","date_gmt":"2021-10-07T23:36:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=7235"},"modified":"2021-10-07T16:36:44","modified_gmt":"2021-10-07T23:36:44","slug":"newsom-sued-over-covid-lockdowns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=7235","title":{"rendered":"Newsom Sued Over COVID Lockdowns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newsom is being sued in court this month by several Carlsbad small businesses who received fines and citations during lockdowns last March.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Governor Gavin Newsom\u2019s Coronavirus lockdowns have resulted in the permanent close of almost a third of all small restaurants. According to the California Restaurant Association, of the 1.8 million people employed in the restaurant industry, more than 1 million of them were out of jobs or laid off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the height of the lockdown season, a group of Carlsbad small business owners decided to stay open in defiance of lockdown orders. \u201c[The police] asked me, are you knowingly going against Gavin Newsom\u2019s orders? And I said, \u2018Yes,\u2019 \u201d says Oak and Elixir co-owner Annie Rammel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following Newsom\u2019s now infamous unrestricted indoor dinner at the French Laundry restaurant, Rammel and other business owners called him out on his hypocrisy, staying open regardless of unlawful protocols or procedures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen the same person that\u2019s telling you and restricting you from being open is going to a restaurant himself and eating inside, not six feet apart, it puts a little fire in you to say\u2026 this isn\u2019t right,\u201d Rammel said in a statement to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reason<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m going to stand up for my rights. I\u2019m going to stand up for my business that I worked extremely hard to run and to have, and I\u2019m going to stand up for the community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rammel and several other small business owners have banded together in Carlsbad to combat Newsom\u2019s tyranny, who now number more than 100 throughout the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the Pandemic lockdowns, Newsom instituted fines and citations which cost many businesses hundreds or even thousands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of this, Rammel and several others in the coalition are suing Newsom. Unfortunately, they have not been successful up to now, and even been struck down by a San Diego Superior\u00a0 Court judge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, Rammel and her associates have brought the case before an appeals court.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Rammel in particular, she states the governor has fined her several thousand dollars over the course of the shutdowns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI still feel like our rights are being tested, and that\u2019s scary because we live in America where we\u2019re supposed to be free, and we\u2019re supposed to be able to have our rights and make the choice to be open\u2026And I think that\u2019s being threatened right now,\u201d Rammel contends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Photo cred: \u00a0Anne Wernikoff<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Newsom is being sued in court this month by several Carlsbad small businesses who received fines and citations during lockdowns last March.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 Governor Gavin Newsom\u2019s Coronavirus lockdowns have resulted in the permanent close of almost a third of all small restaurants.
