{"id":6666,"date":"2021-07-31T08:52:21","date_gmt":"2021-07-31T15:52:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=6666"},"modified":"2021-07-31T08:52:21","modified_gmt":"2021-07-31T15:52:21","slug":"republicans-in-history-jeannette-rankin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=6666","title":{"rendered":"Republicans In History: Jeannette Rankin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When the supposed War on Women was not yet a catch phrase and women still did not have the right to vote, Jeannette Rankin was the first woman elected to Congress \u2013 a Republican woman \u2013 initially\u00a0in\u00a01916 and again in 1940.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 1916, women\u2019s\u00a0universal\u00a0suffrage was gaining traction\u00a0and Rankin had been an activist for the cause.\u00a0Jeannette Rankin had the distinction to be the only woman in Congress to vote in favor of the 19<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Amendment giving women the right to vote.\u00a0 World War I had just gotten off the ground\u00a0as well.\u00a0 She had a mind of her own and as a lifelong pacifist, she voted against the\u00a0United States\u2019 entry into WWI.\u00a0\u00a0She viewed this choice as an opportunity for a woman to say \u201cno\u201d to war.\u00a0This vote\u00a0ultimately\u00a0proved to be controversial.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u00a0Jeannette Rankin had been a lobbyist for the National American Women\u2019s Suffrage Association.\u00a0 She had worked to give women the\u00a0right to\u00a0vote in Montana, her home state.\u00a0 When she was elected to Congress, she took her efforts to\u00a0Washington\u00a0and voted for universal suffrage.\u00a0 Her term in Congress was short.\u00a0\u00a0Montana\u00a0had redrawn the districts and she found herself in a heavily Democrat district.\u00a0 So she ran for the Senate instead and did not get past the primary.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Between terms, she continued her pacifist efforts as well as worked as a Field Secretary for the National Consumers League.\u00a0 She also worked unsuccessfully to enact the passage of a constitutional amendment to ban child labor.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 1940, she was elected to the US Congress for the second time, defeating an incumbent known for being an anti-Semite.\u00a0 She was appointed to the Committee on Public Lands and the Committee on Insular Affairs.\u00a0 She continued her stance as a pacifist stating that \u201cas a woman, I can\u2019t go to war, and I refuse to send anyone else\u201d.\u00a0 The country was embroiled in a heated debate as to whether the nation should enter WWII.\u00a0 This debate came to a sudden end with the attack on\u00a0Pearl Harbor.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">True to her pacifist stand, on December 8, 1941, she was the only member of Congress to vote against the Declaration of War on\u00a0Japan.\u00a0 An angry mob encircled her as she left the Capital building.\u00a0 She was forced to take refuge in a phone booth until she could be rescued.\u00a0\u00a0Two days later, she abstained from the vote of war against\u00a0Germany\u00a0and\u00a0Italy.\u00a0 The public\u2019s backlash was fierce.\u00a0 This vote effectively ended her political career.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 1972, she told the Montana Constitutional Convention,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIf I am remembered for no other act,\u00a0I want to be remembered as the only woman who ever voted to give women the right to vote.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When the supposed War on Women was not yet a catch phrase and women still did not have the right to vote, Jeannette Rankin was the first woman elected to Congress \u2013 a Republican woman \u2013 initially\u00a0in\u00a01916 and again in 1940.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In 1916, women\u2019s\u00a0universal\u00a0suffrage was gaining traction\u00a0and Rankin had been an activist for the cause.\u00a0Jeannette&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":6667,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-6666","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-politics"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v16.5 -
