{"id":6633,"date":"2021-07-27T23:04:50","date_gmt":"2021-07-28T06:04:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=6633"},"modified":"2021-07-27T23:04:50","modified_gmt":"2021-07-28T06:04:50","slug":"newsom-recall-gains-momentum-as-recent-poll-makes-headlines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=6633","title":{"rendered":"Newsom Recall Gains Momentum As Recent Poll Makes Headlines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Written by Brett Wilkins<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Thursday, July 27th, the Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies (IGS) released <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/escholarship.org\/uc\/item\/27x9k5qt\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a poll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that found 47% of California voters support the Recall effort while 50% oppose the Recall, leaving the poll within the margin of error.\u00a0 These numbers come less than three weeks before the Recall election begins, as mail-in ballots will be sent to every voter in the state beginning August 16th.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Recall Election process as explained by the LA Times will go like this: \u201cCalifornians voting in the Sept. 14 election will receive a ballot with two questions: Should Newsom be recalled from office and, if he is ousted, which replacement candidate should take his place. If Newsom is recalled, the candidate on the ballot who receives the most votes wins \u2014 no matter how many votes he or she receives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same poll released by IGS puts conservative news host Larry Elder in first place with 18% of the vote, followed by John Cox and Kevin Faulconer receiving 10% of the vote, respectively.\u00a0 Caitlyn Jenner, by far the most well-known candidate, has only received 3% of the electoral support.\u00a0 While Larry Elder leads the pack of decided voters, 40% of the California electorate is still undecided, leaving a lot of wiggle room for other candidates to garner support.\u00a0 If elected, Elder would be California\u2019s first black governor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As gubernatorial hopefuls seek to gain more votes, they won\u2019t have a chance at the governor\u2019s mansion unless 51% of voters decide to vote YES on the Recall.\u00a0 Carl DeMaio, chair of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/reformcalifornia.org\/volunteer\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reform California<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has been working tirelessly with volunteers state-wide in order to make sure that the recall effort is successful.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBeing in a dead heat in both of these polls is huge for us\u2026 Both polls reflect a huge shift against Newsom\u2019s positions from just two months ago &#8211; and comes after his statewide tour giving away bribes and free stuff to voters,\u201d stated DeMaio.\u00a0 The bribes referred to by DeMaio include $15 million in cash prizes and six dream vacations in exchange for vaccinations, as reported by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/government-and-politics-coronavirus-pandemic-business-vacations-california-4c0796433baf3cb0f445a7b0f46a6805\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Associated Press<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 36% of the Golden State\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/usafacts.org\/visualizations\/covid-vaccine-tracker-states\/state\/california\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">population<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> still has not received a single dose of the vaccine; with Hispanic, Black, and Native American populations being the most hesitant to receive the shot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides his recent vaccine tour, the governor has raised over $32.5 million compared to pro-recall groups, which have only gathered $16.8 million in funding.\u00a0 In mid-July, Vice President Kamala Harris, former Senator for California, announced that she would be helping the Newsom administration in fighting the recall effort.\u00a0 Prominent Democrats, such as failed presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren, have been fighting hard against the recall. But their efforts have been unsuccessful as they failed to stop the recall from going through in the first place.\u00a0 In response to the recent polls, Carl DeMaio stated, \u201cNewsom may have a ton of special interest money to spend on misleading ads, but we have a growing and diverse movement of grassroots activists working hard to win a majority for YES on Recall.\u201d\u00a0 Voter grievances include the high cost of living, skyrocketing crime rates, failing schools, ever-increasing homelessness, and special privileges for politicians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramseysolutions.com\/real-estate\/cost-of-living-in-california\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RamseySolutions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a group focused on helping to connect people in need with opportunities, found that the average cost of living in a California city is 38% higher than the cost of living in an average American city.\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ppic.org\/publication\/crime-trends-in-california\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Public Policy Institute of California<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> highlights \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a troubling increase of about 30% in homicides.\u201d As well as a 20% increase among \u201cboth motor vehicle theft and commercial burglaries increased markedly.\u201d\u00a0 The statistics are compared to 2019 pre-pandemic levels. According to a study conducted by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wallethub.com\/edu\/e\/states-with-the-best-schools\/5335\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WalletHub<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, California is rated 41st out of the 50 states when statistics such as quality and safety are compared. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/2019\/jan\/19\/california-school-funding-los-angeles-strike-what-went-wrong\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Guardian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, California schools fall 38% short of California\u2019s own funding standards.
