In History: Shirley Temple"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Shirley Temple is famously known as a singing and dancing child star in the 1930\u2019s, but she was also a Republican activist for most of her life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She was born in 1928 in Santa Monica, California and began her film career at age three after she was spotted by a casting director at a dance school.\u00a0 Her first films \u201cBaby Burlesks\u201d were one reel shorts satirizing film and political events of the day.\u00a0 Other two-reel short film series \u201cFrolics of Youth\u201d followed.\u00a0 In 1932, Shirley had a small role in her first feature film \u201cRed-Haired Alibi\u201d.\u00a0 When the production company went bankrupt, her father bought out her contract.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A Fox Film songwriter saw Shirley Temple\u00a0dancing\u00a0in the lobby of the theater\u00a0after the showing of her last \u201cFrolics of Youth\u201d film where he recognized her from the movie.\u00a0\u00a0He arranged for her to try out for \u201cStand Up and Cheer!\u201d and she won the part.\u00a0\u00a0It was the beginning of a very successful film career for Shirley Temple.\u00a0\u00a0She gained international fame with the film \u201cBright Eyes\u201d\u00a0with the song \u201cOn the Good Ship Lollipop\u201d.\u00a0 In 1935, she was awarded a special Juvenile Academy Award for her contribution to the film industry.\u00a0\u00a0She became the number one box office star from\u00a01935 to\u00a01938 and the studio\u2019s most valuable asset.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ultimately\u00a0Shirley Temple made\u00a014 short films, 43 feature films and over 25 storybook films during her career.\u00a0\u00a0She retired from the film industry at the tender age of 22.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Shirley Temple married John Agar an Army Air Corp sergeant at the age of 17 with whom she had a daughter.\u00a0 That marriage became troubled and lasted only four years.\u00a0\u00a0After her divorce, she met Charles Alden Black, a former USN intelligence officer who was Assistant to the President of the Hawaiian Pineapple Company and considered one of the wealthiest young men in California at the time.\u00a0 They married in December 1950 at his parents\u2019 home in Del Monte, California.\u00a0 They had two children and were married for 54 years until Charles passed away in 2005.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Shirley Temple began her\u00a0political career as a Republican activist in 1967.\u00a0 She unsuccessfully ran\u00a0as a conservative\u00a0for the 11<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Congressional District.\u00a0\u00a0After her unsuccessful congressional run, she began her foreign service as the\u00a0US\u00a0Representative to the UN Assembly after Henry Kissinger overheard her speaking about\u00a0Namibia\u00a0at a party.\u00a0 She was subsequently appointed as Ambassador to\u00a0Ghana.\u00a0 She was appointed at the first female Chief of Protocol of the\u00a0United States\u00a0and was in charge of President Carter\u2019s inauguration and ball.\u00a0 President Bush later appointed her Ambassador to\u00a0Czechoslovakia.\u00a0 She witnessed the\u00a0country\u2019s fight against communism.\u00a0 She was in\u00a0Prague\u00a0when the Soviet tanks rolled down the streets, eye witnessing an unarmed woman shot by the Soviet troops.\u00a0 She helped hasten the end of communism\u00a0in that country\u00a0by openly sympathizing with the anti-communist movement.\u00a0 She became ambassador\u00a0during the Velvet Revolution which saw the fall of the communist regime.\u00a0 She hastened the recognition of the new government of Vaclav Havel.\u00a0\u00a0She took the step of personally accompanying Havel on his\u00a0first visit to\u00a0Washington\u00a0DC.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Shirley Temple is an American film icon, but more importantly, she was a great American patriot.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Shirley Temple is famously known as a singing and dancing child star in
