{"id":6232,"date":"2021-06-03T17:37:37","date_gmt":"2021-06-04T00:37:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=6232"},"modified":"2021-06-03T17:39:13","modified_gmt":"2021-06-04T00:39:13","slug":"republicans-in-history-john-ford","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=6232","title":{"rendered":"Republicans In History: John Ford"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Born John Feeney, t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he son of Irish immigrants, John Ford followed his older brother, the actor, Francis Ford, to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hollywood<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He started out as an assistant, handyman, stunt man, actor, and sometimes double for his older brother at his brother\u2019s production company.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Although the relationship with Francis was at times contentious, within three years, John was his brother\u2019s primary assistant and cameraman. When John Ford was afforded his first opportunity as a director<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0four years later,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0his brother Francis was already on the decline and stopped directing shortly thereafter.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">John Ford is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">best known for his westerns and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is considered one of the best directors of all time.\u00a0 He started in silent films though most of his silent movies have since been lost.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He was a prolific director, especially in the first years of his career.\u00a0 He made dozens of shorts and features during the silent film era, honing his skills on westerns.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">John Ford\u2019s first major success was \u201cThe Iron Horse\u201d made in 1924.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When sound came along, John Ford was one of the pioneers taking to this new technology, \u201cthe talkies\u201d.\u00a0 He filmed the first song sung on film in \u201cMother\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Machree\u201d for<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the Fox Studios in 1928.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">John Wayne also appeared as an\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">uncredited<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0extra in this same film.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Once sound was the standard, John Ford started a streak of successful feature films which resulted in Academy Awards and nominations.\u00a0 \u201cThe Informer\u201d, \u201cStagecoach\u201d, \u201cThe Grapes of Wrath\u201d and \u201cHow Green Was My Valley\u201d reaped many Academy Award nominations and wins.\u00a0 In 1940, John Ford became known for his westerns.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">During WWII, John Ford served in the USN as a reserve officer.\u00a0 He\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">served as the head of the photographic unit for the Office of Strategic Services.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">During his tenure in the Navy, he won two more Academy Awards for the semi-documentary film \u201cThe Battle of Midway\u201d and for \u201cDecember 7<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d.\u00a0 He was present for the battle of the Midway\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">where he was wounded and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0on\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Omaha<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Beach<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for D-Day.\u00a0 He filmed the invasion<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">OSS<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0 The film was never released to the public as it was considered by the government to show too many American casualties.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He was cited for bravery as he took exposed and dangerous positions to be able to film the operations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It was said that John Ford became a Republican due to the influence of John Wayne, Maureen O\u2019Hara and James Stewart.\u00a0 In 1947, he declared himself to be a \u201cMaine Republican\u201d.\u00a0 He was awarded the Medal of Freedom by Richard Nixon in 1973.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Born John Feeney, the son of Irish immigrants, John Ford followed his older brother, the actor, Francis Ford, to Hollywood.\u00a0\u00a0He started out as an assistant, handyman, stunt man, actor, and sometimes double for his older brother at his brother\u2019s production company.\u00a0 Although the relationship with Francis was at times contentious, within three years, John was&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":6235,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-6232","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-politics"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v16.5 -
