Eisenhower, the 34<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0President of the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">United<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">State<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">America<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, was a straightforward military man who desired only to serve his country.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As the third of seven brothers, there was no money for college.\u00a0 He made a deal with his older brother that they would take turns working and going to college so as to earn the necessary funds for tuition.\u00a0 His brother took his turn going to school first while Dwight worked as a night supervisor at the local creamery.\u00a0 After the first year, his brother asked if he could continue on for one more year and Dwight agreed.\u00a0 Meanwhile, a friend was applying for an appointment to the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Naval<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Academy<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0where no tuition was needed.\u00a0 Dwight was one of the winners of the entrance exam competition, but was too old for the Academy, so he accepted an appointment to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">West Point<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From a pure military standpoint, Dwight Eisenhower spent most of his career in middle management and never saw battlefront action.\u00a0 He developed refined administrative and planning skills under a series of brilliant generals, Fox Connor, John Pershing, Douglas MacArthur, and George Marshall.\u00a0 His ability to interact and manage people \u2013 a talent he developed as General MacArthur\u2019s chief military aide &#8211;\u00a0 led to his appointment by Roosevelt as the Supreme Allied Commander and chief planner behind Operation Overlord and the invasion of Normandy.\u00a0 This required the successful coordination and management of various Allied forces and sometimes heated interaction with Churchill, Roosevelt, de Gaulle and other Allied commanders.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After the end of the war, Eisenhower was appointed Military Governor of the US Occupation Zone in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Germany<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0 He ordered the photographic documentation of the death camps as they were uncovered, evidence that was used at the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nuremberg<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Trials.\u00a0 He returned to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Washington<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0as Chief of Staff of the Army to guide the demobilization of soldiers.\u00a0 He became President of Columbia University.\u00a0 During his tenure as President of Columbia University, he also became NATO Supreme Commander.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Having never previously been in politics, Eisenhower was pressed to run as a Democrat by President Truman.\u00a0 It was at this time that Eisenhower announced his misgivings with the Democrat Party and declared himself and his family Republican.\u00a0\u00a0 A \u201cDraft Eisenhower\u201d movement ensued, pushing him to declare as a candidate for the 1952 Presidential race. He was the first Republican President elected to the highest office in the land in 20 years.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As President, Eisenhower had a clear vision.\u00a0 Before taking office, he met with advisors and drew up a plan of action:\u00a0 1) balance the federal budget; 2) bring the Korean conflict to a close; 3) maintain strong national defense through nuclear deterrent; and end price and wage controls.\u00a0 He held a pre-inaugural Cabinet meeting to solidify his anti-communist Soviet policy which he reiterated in his inaugural address.\u00a0 He campaigned on putting an end to corruption and implementing a frugal administration. He appointed\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Oveda<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Culp Hobby as the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare, the first woman ever appointed to a cabinet position.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">During his tenure as President, he is known for establishing the interstate highway system which was the result of his experience with German\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">autobans<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. He understood that it was paramount to national security to have an efficient means of moving material and goods quickly across the country.\u00a0 He also established NASA, a civilian agency focused on space exploration.\u00a0 His administration created the unique call sign \u201cAir Force One\u201d for any aircraft carrying the President of the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">United States<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0after a near miss with a commercial airliner.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He formalized the office of Chief of Staff.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He requested and received from Congress the Formosa Resolution affording the President expanded powers to protect the Republic of China (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Taiwan<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">) and limit the encroachment of communism to the islands around\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Taiwan<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0 The armistice with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Korea<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was enacted which is enforced along the same boundaries to this day<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0which ended the Korean Conflict<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">President Eisenhower\u2019s foreign policy was dominated by his strong anti-communist stance.\u00a0 This drove his foreign policy relationships with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Korea<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">China<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Russia<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Indochina<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Middle East<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0 From his experience after WWII\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he understood\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that communism\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">could not be contained.\u00a0 Whenever possible, i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t was preferable to replace it as the system of government.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This policy led to what became known as the \u201cEisenhow<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">er Doctrine\u201d in the Middle East where the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">US<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0gave support to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">shaky governments friendly to the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">US<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to avoid communist takeovers in the region.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At home, President Eisenhower\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">continued to enact the reforms begun by Republicans after the Civil War.\u00a0 He understood that communist propaganda used racist policies as weapons against the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">US<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0 President Eisenhower considered racial discrimination a question of national security.\u00a0 He moved to forcefully implement the plan initiated by Truman but slow to execute\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of desegregating the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0armed forces.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He proposed to Congress the Civil Rights Acts of 1957 and 1960 establishing a civil rights office inside the Department of Justice and a permanent civil rights commission \u2013 the first civil rights legislation passed by Congress since Republicans passed the Civil Rights Act of 1875.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">President Eisenhower\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">mandated the desegregation of public schools in the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">District of Columbia<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0as a model for the rest of the country.\u00a0 He federalized the Arkansas National Guard and sent the 101<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">st<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Airborne Division to protect 9 black children entering\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Little Rock<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Central<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">High School<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0when the governor refused to enforce the Supreme Court ruling desegregating public schools.\u00a0 He stated<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We have not taken and we shall not take a single backward step. There must be no second-class citizens in this country.&#8221;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">President Eisenhower left office with a strong sense of having accomplished the goals he set out at the beginning of his presidency.\u00a0 His farewell speech is considered one of the most memorable since\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Washington<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0 In this speech, he coined the now famous term \u201cmilitary-industrial complex\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">History has treated him kindly and he is now looked upon as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">one of the more successful Presidents this country has seen.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We remember and honor our military during the month of May and their contribution to the greatness of our country.\u00a0 Dwight D.
