{"id":5960,"date":"2021-05-04T14:53:41","date_gmt":"2021-05-04T21:53:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=5960"},"modified":"2021-05-04T14:53:41","modified_gmt":"2021-05-04T21:53:41","slug":"california-loses-congressional-seat-for-the-first-time-in-state-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=5960","title":{"rendered":"California Loses Congressional Seat for the First Time in State History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Written by Justin Culetu\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the 2020 Census results, California is set to lose a congressional seat for the first time in the state\u2019s history.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is because of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/videos\/us\/2021\/04\/11\/moving-to-texas-pandemic-sg-orig.cnn\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exodus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of people and businesses that has been worsening for decades. Especially in the last decade, Californians have fled the Democrat stronghold due to excessive taxation, a growing homeless population, and a degrading quality of life in the state, among other things. Additionally, the overbearing COVID-19 restrictions only further amplified the exodus. Luckily for Republicans, the biggest beneficiaries of this are red states, which gained congressional seats this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a whole year, California remained one of the most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/us\/states-reopen-map-coronavirus.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">locked-down states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the country, with little results to show for it. On the other hand, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/2021\/04\/california-v-texas-handling-the-covid-19-pandemic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Texas,<\/span><\/a> which gained 2 congressional seats,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0was one of the first states to remove government mandated COVID restrictions, and actually saw a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcdfw.com\/news\/coronavirus\/one-month-after-covid-19-mandates-lift-numbers-continue-to-decline\/2601964\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in cases. Florida, which also gained a congressional seat, had very few restrictions from the very beginning and continues to outperform California. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, Gov. Newsom&#8217;s lockdown kept children out of school, caused financial hardships for many families, and forced thousands of small businesses to permanently close down. Also, rather than prioritizing the people of California during a time of uncertainty, Gavin Newsom signed legislation allowing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/california-divide\/2021\/02\/california-600-stimulus-checks-undocumented-workers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$600 stimulus checks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be handed to illegal immigrants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of taxes, California remains one of the highest <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/robertwood\/2017\/08\/31\/californias-13-3-tax-on-capital-gains-inspires-move-then-sell-tactics\/?sh=e0787af20975\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">capital gains taxing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> states in the country. And as a result, multiple tech companies and billionaires have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/01\/23\/why-companies-are-fleeing-california.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moved<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> their headquarters out of the state, leaving the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/story\/2020-12-18\/california-economy-loses-momentum-covid-19-surge\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">economy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in shambles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, the quality of life in the state has been steadily declining. With a high <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/727847\/homelessness-rate-in-the-us-by-state\/#:~:text=When%20analyzing%20the%20ratio%20of,any%20of%20the%2050%20states.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">homeless population<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that state officials struggle to solve, popular cities like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VEOkX9dp85I\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Francisco<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have seen their streets overrun with trash, feces, needles, and more; all disrupting the health and quality of life of the public. Crime has also been an increasing problem, with California ranking 36th overall in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/best-states\/california\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public safety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on the Census results, it can be inferred that the leaders of the Golden State have become unfamiliar with the actual needs of their constituents.
