Californians for the Arts is an organization that believes the “arts should be accessible to every Californian and that the arts are essential to any prosperous and truly democratic society.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Included in the recently signed state budget will be an additional $10 million for the California Arts Council (CAC). The total funding for the agency is now at $26 million, with the latest funding increase being the largest in 20 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The CAC is also administering a $9 million grant to begin improvements to Building 178 at Liberty Station, which has been vacant for awhile now. The hope is for Liberty Station to become a performing arts center. This grant is the largest since the foundation was started and will cover the repairs of the structure, the lease, and the care of 26 buildings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Assemblyman Todd Gloria, who had appealed for the funding, said that \u201cthis is great news for San Diego\u2019s arts-and-culture community.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The San Diego Repertory Theatre located in Horton Plaza was given the title of Jubilee Cultural Architect. The Jubilee \u201cdefines cultural architects as organizations or individuals that have been producing work of historically marginalized voices for 20-years or more.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Repertory Theatre is being acknowledged for the work they have done to attribute the historical aspect of the theater.\u00a0<\/span>Overall, the arts community of San Diego County has improved immensely in recent years and will likely continue to grow as the renovations continue at Liberty Station.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
