The Secretary of State’s office has announced that 1.6M signatures to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom have been verified, far surpassing the required 1,495,709 signatures.<\/p>\n
“This now triggers the next phase of the recall process, a 30-business-day period in which voters may submit written requests to county Registrars of Voters to remove their names from the recall petition,” Secretary Weber said in a statement. “A recall election will be held unless a sufficient number of signatures are withdrawn.”<\/p>\n
After the 30 day signature retraction period, the Department of Finance will have 30 days to estimate the cost of the recall election. Then, the budget committee will have 30 days to review the estimates, Finally, the recall election date will be set by the Lieutenant Governor.<\/p>\n
That means it will be at least 90 days before we see a recall election, and that’s if the Lieutenant Governor holds the election ASAP.<\/p>\n
The recall ballot will ask voters to choose “yes” or “no” on removing Newsom from office.<\/p>\n
A second question will ask which candidate should replace Newsom. If the majority of voters choose “yes,” Newsom will be replaced by the candidate with the highest number of votes, regardless of the percentage they are victorious by.<\/p>\n
Newsom is facing a challenge from several notable candidates including John Cox, former Mayor Kevin Faulconer, Major Williams, and former Rep. Doug Ose.<\/p>\n
Caitlyn Jenner also announced her candidacy this week, saying in a tweet that “California is worth fighting for.”<\/p>\n
