{"id":5244,"date":"2021-02-04T13:00:03","date_gmt":"2021-02-04T20:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=5244"},"modified":"2021-02-04T16:57:44","modified_gmt":"2021-02-04T23:57:44","slug":"recall-effort-against-city-council-president-jennifer-campbell-officially-begins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=5244","title":{"rendered":"Recall Effort against City Council President Jennifer Campbell officially begins\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Written by Justin Culetu\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaders of the campaign to recall San Diego City Council President <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/2020\/12\/recall-campaign-for-councilwoman-jen-campbell-begins\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Jennifer Campbell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> initiated the process by providing a notice of intent for the Councilwoman\u2019s recall, which is expected to be published in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdtranscript.com\/index.cfm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Diego Daily Transcript<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Campbell represents District 2 and was narrowly elected as City Council President over fellow Democrat Monica Montgomery Steppe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those in favor of the recall effort are upset with several of her recent decisions. The first being supporting Measure E. The measure lifted height limits in the area near the sports arena and voting records show the majority of District 2 residents were opposed to that. Her constituents were also angered by her proposed vacation rental legislation, saying that it is too lenient. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCouncilmember Campbell has betrayed the voters and is unfit for office,\u201d the recall notice says. \u201cHaving no other recourse, we the residents of District 2, together with concerned residents throughout the city, have come together to take this action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also mentioned in the notice is her inability to accept opposing opinions from residents during community meetings as well as ignoring suggestions from electors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Campbell was dismissive and critical of the recall, saying \u201cIt is a selfish and irresponsible political stunt,\u201d in an email to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/news\/politics\/story\/2021-02-02\/recall-campaign-against-san-diego-city-council-president-is-officially-on\">UT<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The campaign has until the first week of June to gather 14,421 signatures from the residents of District 2. However, the signatures cannot be gathered until three weeks after the notice was published in order to give Campbell enough time to publish a rebuttal.
