{"id":4785,"date":"2020-12-03T12:30:27","date_gmt":"2020-12-03T19:30:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=4785"},"modified":"2020-12-04T12:44:05","modified_gmt":"2020-12-04T19:44:05","slug":"san-diego-secretly-planned-to-test-out-a-military-grade-drone-to-catch-speeding-drivers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=4785","title":{"rendered":"San Diego secretly planned to test out a military-grade drone to catch speeding drivers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voiceofsandiego.org\/topics\/government\/san-diego-kept-quiet-on-plans-for-military-grade-drone-to-catch-speeding-drivers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voice of San Diego<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> obtained records indicating that the city\u2019s Office of Homeland Security had been supportive of using the SkyGuardian drone made, by a local defense contractor, for vehicle enforcement on the freeway, but had asked the company to withhold that information from the public. <\/span>The drone weighs more than 12,500lbs and has a wingspan of 79ft.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In mid-2019 General Atomics, the maker of the drone, announced that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ga-asi.com\/ga-asi-partnering-with-nasa-to-demo-commercial-mission-with-a-large-uas-in-southern-california\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">city backed the objectives of the SkyGuardian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but omitted inclusion of the traffic enforcement use of the drone, per the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voiceofsandiego.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/OHS-UAS-GA-PRA-1-Nov.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">request of city officials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As late as December 2019 the company continued to offer the city assistance with \u201cborder traffic surveillance, stoplight functionality, and vehicle speed enforcement,\u201d and furthermore provided a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voiceofsandiego.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/OHS-UAS-GA-PRA-2-Nov.pdf\">route<\/a> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that the SkyGuardian could take through Southern California.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the time General Atomics initiated the SkyGuardian test flight in April 2020, the project had been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voiceofsandiego.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/OHS-UAS-GA-PRA-3-Nov.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transferred<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from San Diego\u2019s Office of Homeland Security to the city\u2019s Economic Development Department.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The San Diego Economic Development Corporation had become responsible for integrating commercially available drones into everyday life, but in December 2019 declined to provide any direct support to General Atomics for the SkyGuardian test flight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While using drones to help police in San Diego may have only been an idea, it is important to consider that such an implementation would likely cost the city a fortune and increase the number of tickets given out.
