The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded nearly $1.3 million to the San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC) in the form of 100 federal rental housing vouchers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

HUD created the vouchers to help 18-61-year-olds with disabilities that are low income or homeless pay rent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the importance of having a home you can afford, especially for vulnerable populations, including adults with disabilities. \u201cThese additional housing vouchers will provide essential rental assistance for these households,\u201d said Richard Gentry, president and CEO of the Housing Commission.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

With Mainstream Vouchers, tenants pay a predetermined amount towards their rent. The SDHC covers the remainder and pays it directly to the landlord. The payment standard is the max subsidy payment for a rental housing unit that a voucher would pay, based on the number of bedrooms approved for the family and the community to which the family moves.<\/span><\/p>\n

SDHC assists more than 16,000 low-income families in San Diego.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the 2020 fiscal year, SDHC has paid more than $166 million to nearly 6,000 participating landlords on behalf of low-income households through its federal rental assistance program.<\/span><\/p>\n
