The voting was almost entirely along party lines\u00a0in both legislative chambers, and Gov. Newsom signed it into law soon after passage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bill essentially restricts charter school funding for next year to attendance numbers corresponding with this past year. This is a problem because the number of charter school students is expected to double as a result of the coronavirus-induced lockdowns. If a charter school had 50 students this year and is expecting 100 students next year, they will now only receive funds correspondent to having 50 students.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Schools shouldn&#39;t be forced to reopen<\/p>\n<p>Teachers shouldn&#39;t be forced to go back to schools<\/p>\n<p>But families also shouldn&#39;t be forced to fund schools that aren&#39;t adequately educating their children<\/p>\n<p>The money should follow the child to wherever they are receiving an education.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Corey A. In the private sector, these actions would be illegal and the monopoly would be broken up. But because this is government sanctioned, it is permitted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assemblyman Kevin Kiley was one of the only vocal critics of the bill. He stated that charter school teachers live in fear of the state government due to worrying what they will pass next to try and put them out of business. &#8220;That\u2019s a dynamic that should never exist in the modern liberal democracy, yet this bill intensifies it like never before,&#8221; Kiley said.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I ask with all sincerity: what does Governor Newsom have against poor kids? <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SB98?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#SB98<\/a> is his latest move to diminish opportunity, widen achievement gaps, and enrich special interests by attacking charter schools. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4Z5xHUquXr\">pic.twitter.com\/4Z5xHUquXr<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Kevin Kiley (@KevinKileyCA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KevinKileyCA\/status\/1277330932978970624?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 28, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This bill is only going to make it more difficult for charter schools and, more importantly, students. Given that charter schools have been routing public schools with what meager funding they already had, there is still a chance for charter schools to continue outperforming the competition.
