{"id":3474,"date":"2020-07-01T11:00:04","date_gmt":"2020-07-01T18:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=3474"},"modified":"2020-07-01T12:02:21","modified_gmt":"2020-07-01T19:02:21","slug":"state-senator-brian-jones-releases-video-discussing-disastrous-ab-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=3474","title":{"rendered":"State Senator Brian Jones Releases Video Discussing Disastrous AB 5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Written by Julianne Foster<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State Senator Brian Jones of the 38th Senate District releases a <a href=\"https:\/\/jones.cssrc.us\/news\/are-you-kidding-me\">series of videos<\/a> called &#8220;Are You Kidding Me?&#8221; (AYKM), which typically question recent government actions and decisions that aren\u2019t in favor of Californians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jones.cssrc.us\/content\/jones-ab-5-threat-small-businesses-jobs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">latest video<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was released on June 25 and discusses <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=201920200AB5\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assembly Bill 5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a law passed last year by &#8220;socialist liberals in the California Legislature to force independent contractors into becoming employees whether they like it or not.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several industries, such as driving, freelancing, music, art, manufacturing, construction, event planning, etc. have been fighting AB 5 in the courts and elsewhere. So far, truckers have been granted exemption from this law, while other companies in the driving industry, such as Uber, Lyft, and Doordash are still awaiting their outcome since they have qualified for an initiative for the November ballot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Hard-working Californians should be making these decisions, not politicians living in an ivory tower or who have never had a real job or business,&#8221; Senator Jones added.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/AB5stories?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#AB5stories<\/a>, Kathi: &quot;I&#39;m begging you to suspend <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/AB5?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#AB5<\/a>. I depend on my at-home transcription pay to survive &amp; pay my bills. California Attorney General Xavier Becerra and city attorneys of Los Angeles and San Francisco have filed lawsuits against Uber and Lyft to force drivers to become employees. For drivers, being an independent contractor allows them a lot of benefits including control of their schedule, hours, and what trips they take.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many Californians have been working to repeal AB 5 as it threatens their livelihoods. The fluidity and control they have over their job as independent contractors allow many struggling workers to enter into these fields to provide more income for their families while still accessing education or having other jobs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isaiah Etuk-Navajo is a student and app-based delivery driver for Instacart and Postmates who adamantly prefers the flexibility of independent contracting. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?time_continue=12&amp;v=gzBjqTjvs-c&amp;feature=emb_title\">In an interview<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> he described his work hours which fluctuate around his school schedule. &#8220;I need this kind of independent work and control over my schedule so I can pay my bills, pay my tuition, and stay focused in school.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This threat to food delivery services puts many people at risk, especially those that need income more than ever as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
