The repairs were needed due to a fatal collision in 2017 with a Philippines-flagged cargo vessel off the coast of Japan. This tragic event led to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/submit\/display.asp?story_id=101102\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">casualties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of seven sailors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The USS Fitzgerald will be returning to the principal homeport of the Pacific Fleet, Naval Base San Diego. Once &#8216;Fighting Fitz&#8217; arrives in port, preparations will begin for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">future deployments. According to the Commanding Officer of the USS Fitzgerald, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cmd. Scott Wilbur<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the repair project was made possible by the extremely important government-industry relationship. The U.S. Navy\u2019s priority throughout this restoration project was to return &#8216;Fighting Fitz&#8217; to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/submit\/display.asp?story_id=113258\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;fighting shape.&#8221;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prior to this 2017 collision, USS Fitzgerald has been a strong force in the Asia-Pacific region. The ship&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/surfor\/ddg62\/Pages\/Ourship.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maiden deployment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was in the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet Areas of Responsibility. USS Fitzgerald has operated as part of multinational interception forces upholding UN sanctions as well as supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. Additionally, &#8216;Fighting Fitz&#8217; has been a key player in a range of joint military training drills and exercises with the Republic of Korea, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/surfor\/ddg85\/Pages\/USSFitzgerald,USSMcCampbellBeginExercisewithRussianNavy.aspx\">Russian Federation<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/surfor\/ddg62\/pages\/ussfitzgeraldcompletessuccessfulfiringexerciseduringtalismansabre2011.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Australia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In 2011, USS Fitzgerald hosted the U.S. Secretary of State and the Philippines Foreign Affairs Secretary for the signing of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/surfor\/ddg62\/Pages\/USSFitzgeraldHostsSigningofManilaDeclaration.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manila Declaration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Director of Surface Ship Maintenance and Modernization <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/submit\/display.asp?story_id=113258\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rear Adm. Eric Ver Hage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> describes USS Fitzgerald as &#8220;one of our nation\u2019s most capable warfighting platforms.&#8221; This signals that USS Fitzgerald\u2019s return to the Pacific Fleet marks a strategic and important move towards war-fighting readiness and possible future deployments.
