The fire devastated the town of Paradise, causing 84 deaths and destroying almost 19,000 buildings\u2014creating immense public support for holding PG&amp;E accountable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A year-long investigation by Butte County District Attorney Michael Ramsey concluded that outdated power lines sparked the fire. As they&#8217;ve described the loss they&#8217;ve continued to endure and the wounds that can never really heal,&#8221; said PG&amp;E CEO Bill Johnson. &#8220;No words from me can ever reduce the magnitude of that devastation or do anything to repair the damage. But I sincerely hope that the actions we&#8217;re taking today will help bring some measure of peace.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company will be fined the maximum amount prosecutors could ask for under the law: $3.5 million. They\u2019ll also pay a $25.5 billion settlement to compensate the families of the fire\u2019s victims and Butte County agencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/2019\/10\/farewell-pge\/\">PG&amp;E<\/a> has been a <a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/2019\/11\/the-tragic-failures-of-pge-and-sdge\/\">trainwreck<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/2019\/11\/republican-leaders-holding-pge-accountable\/\">budgetary<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/2019\/11\/fear-not-pge-to-the-rescue\/\">disasters<\/a> over the past few years, making this <a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/2020\/03\/pge-pleads-guilty-to-nearly-100-counts-of-manslaughter-from-2018-camp-fire\/\">neglectful fire<\/a> one of many issues with the energy company.
