State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson, who represents the 19th district, had some harsh words for independent contractors who have been decimated by AB 5 during a recent Senate Labor, Public Employment, and Retirement committee meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The purpose of the meeting was for Senators Shannon Grove and John Moorlach to present their respective coronavirus proposals. Senator Grove\u2019s proposal (SB 806) would\u2019ve changed some AB 5 restrictions and Moorlach\u2019s (SB 990) would&#8217;ve outright suspended AB 5 until 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AB 5 has crippled the gig economy and eliminated countless jobs, with the effects being severely compounded by the historic unemployment we&#8217;re now facing. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, the partisan Democratic-controlled committee rejected both proposals, which was expected. What wasn\u2019t expected, however, was Senator Jackson\u2019s insensitive comment to independent contractors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I appreciate that some independent contractors are upset. AB 5 took away their lollipop,&#8221; said Jackson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no doubt that Jackson\u2019s district is home to many independent contractors, so the fact that she appreciates that they are upset and views their livelihood as &#8220;lollipops&#8221; should really get independent contractors\u2014and anyone who opposes employment discrimination\u2014fired up. It\u2019s maddening to hear an elected official refer to their constituents&#8217; jobs, essentially, as a treat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thankfully, I&#8217;m not alone in being disgusted by this type of rhetoric, as many people expressed their disgust on Twitter:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/GaryMichaels6\/status\/1261534375927136256<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&quot;I appreciate that some independent contractors are upset. No elected official who truly cares about their constituents would behave like this otherwise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you aren\u2019t already familiar with Gonzalez, she\u2019s extremely unprofessional and is never afraid to disrespect or demean her constituents. Lately, she\u2019s been in the news for cursing at Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Twitter:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">F*ck Elon Musk.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Lorena Gonzalez (@LorenaSGonzalez) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LorenaSGonzalez\/status\/1259287879177531392?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 10, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She has also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/2020\/05\/assemblywoman-lorena-gonzalez-demeans-protesters-who-want-their-jobs-back\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">demeaned protestors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who wanted their jobs back, sponsored <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/2020\/03\/affirmative-action-bill-sponsored-by-assemblywomen-shirley-weber-and-lorena-gonzalez-is-racist-and-regressive\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">racist and regressive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bills, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/2020\/02\/assemblywoman-lorena-gonzalez-shouts-fk-donald-trump-at-campaign-event\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shouted profanities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the president at a campaign rally, and much more. She has a very controversial and embarrassing record as an assemblywoman, and hopefully her constituents remember that in November.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many liberal officials are forgetting that they work for their constituents, not the other way around. You\u2019d be hard-pressed to find someone who thinks it\u2019s a good idea to destroy the gig economy and eliminate the jobs of millions of independent contractors. You don\u2019t want it, I don\u2019t want it, and independent contractors certainly don\u2019t want it.
