A request was then sent to Newsom, because the governor&#8217;s approval is required to proceed.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Our momentum is building, San Diego County! Thanks to your support, starting tomorrow (May 20), restaurants will be open for dine-in and retail shops for in-store shopping.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Supervisor Jim Desmond (@jim_desmond) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jim_desmond\/status\/1262839424569630720?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 19, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A separate vote for San Diego to become a pilot program passed also passed by a 4-1 margin, with Supervisor Nathan Fletcher representing the lone &#8216;no&#8217; vote. And while it\u2019s better late than never, this could\u2019ve been accomplished sooner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supervisors Jim Desmond and Kristin Gaspar have been pushing to reopen San Diego for several weeks now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">On April 21st, I made the following motion to develop a plan to open certain businesses on May 1st. While this is later than I would have liked, we are starting to open the door. Pending state approval, certain businesses will be open. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/8JgC9bLEQP\">pic.twitter.com\/8JgC9bLEQP<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Supervisor Jim Desmond (@jim_desmond) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jim_desmond\/status\/1262873165581086721?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 19, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back in April, Desmond <a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/2020\/04\/county-supervisors-jim-desmond-and-kristin-gaspar-pushing-for-safe-reopening-of-san-diego\/\">presented<\/a> a proposal to open outdoor recreational activities and pushed for businesses to be open by May 1. Gaspar backed the proposal, but the rest of the County Supervisors shut down their proposal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weeks of economic hardship for thousands of San Diegans could\u2019ve been avoided if Supervisors Greg Cox, Dianne Jacob, and Nathan Fletcher would\u2019ve approved Desmond&#8217;s proposal a month ago. Nonetheless, we can\u2019t change the past and it\u2019s time to pick up the pieces of our broken economy and rebuild it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The county likely would not even be reopening yet if it weren\u2019t for the momentum created by Supervisors Desmond and Gaspar.
