Newsom says he was never considering that, and it was only going to be OC. Who to believe? Governor or CA Police Chief\u2019s Association? <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FOXLA?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@FOXLA<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/NsqhIF3f8T\">pic.twitter.com\/NsqhIF3f8T<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Bill Melugin (@BillMelugin_) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BillMelugin_\/status\/1255944587438198784?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 30, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was an immediate and fierce reaction from the public and many local leaders. Then, the plan abruptly changed and Newsom said he was never considering closing all parks and beaches.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, the new closures would be specifically targeted at Orange County. He cited large beach crowds over the weekend as his motivation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this was a disappointment to the many Orange County residents who have been following social distancing recommendations, other localities rejoiced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In San Diego, local officials have been fighting hard to reopen businesses and recreational activities. Many of them tweeted excitedly after it was revealed that we would not be affected by the order.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mayor Kevin Faulconer proclaimed that we don\u2019t need \u201cknee-jerk\u201d policies in times of crisis, \u201cwe need to keep a steady hand.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Great news: the Governor heard us. San Diego beaches WILL STAY OPEN under our plan approved by lifeguards and health officials. In a time of great crisis we don&#39;t need knee-jerk policies. We need to keep a steady hand. It\u2019s the only way to keep the public\u2019s trust. Late last night &amp; early this am I was on local news &amp; sent Gov letter urging him to reverse his proposal to re-close ALL beaches. Glad common sense prevailed &amp; beaches are back under local control. He felt we needed to \u201ctake a deep breath\u201d and \u201cwait to actually hear from the governor.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/nathanfletcher\/status\/1255927868611104768?s=21<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Newsom announced that the restrictions would only target Orange County, Fletcher tweeted this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/nathanfletcher\/status\/1255941706349809665?s=21<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We should not have to wait to hear from the governor regarding an official memo. The memo was very clear in stating that \u201c<\/span><b>ALL<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> beaches and all state parks in California will be closed, effective Friday, May 1st.<\/span><b>\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The word \u201call\u201d was bolded <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and capitalized<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the memo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As diligent citizens, we have the right to react to actions like this, even if we haven\u2019t heard directly from the governor or whoever may be making the decision. Either this memo contained inaccurate information, or Newsom abruptly changed course due to the immediate backlash. Either way, the people of California are not to blame here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supervisor Desmond, rather than blaming concerned citizens, exclaimed that \u201c[Our] voices are being heard!\u201d He and others sent letters to Newsom insisting that he reconsider the decision to close all beaches statewide.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Your voices are being heard, San Diego County! There have been \u201cfreedom rallies\u201d and protests throughout the state. State and local officials are under extreme pressure to start rolling back restrictive measures and reopen businesses, parks, and beaches.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With that being said, Mayor Kevin Faulconer, County Supervisors Kristin Gaspar and Jim Desmond, along with many others are working hard to help us return to normalcy.
