Since it is becoming apparent that COVID-19 restrictions will not be a short-term matter, we have made the sad decision to cancel Comic-Con for the first time in its 50-year history.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Comic-Con International (@Comic_Con) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Comic_Con\/status\/1251240729151602689?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 17, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRecognizing that countless attendees save and plan for conventions each year, and how many exhibitors and stakeholders rely upon its events for a major portion of their livelihood, (we) had hoped to delay this decision in anticipation that COVID-19 concerns might lessen by summer,\u201d the organization wrote in a news release. \u201cContinuous monitoring of health advisories and recent statements by the Governor of California have made it clear that it would not be safe to move forward with plans for this year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those who purchased <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">badges<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be eligible for a refund or may transfer their badges to Comic-Con 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cExtraordinary times require extraordinary measures and while we are saddened to take this action, we know it is the right decision,\u201d said David Glanzer, a Comic-Con spokesperson. \u201cWe eagerly look forward to the time when we can all meet again and share in the community we all love and enjoy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Comic_Con?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Comic_Con<\/a> cares about every single fan. I commend them for making the difficult choice to cancel in 2020. We\u2018ll miss our comic heroes but right now we all have a chance to be a real-life hero\u2014and save lives by staying home. More than 2,500 media personnel from 30 countries also attended. The event generated around $88 million directly, with a regional impact of around $149 million. Hotels also benefited from Comic-Con, and saw $3 million in increased revenue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Economic woes resulting from event cancellations are nothing new unfortunately. Music festivals, car shows, weddings, and much more have been postponed or cancelled as a result of the coronavirus.
