These dire circumstances have called for dire measures, with many schools shutting down indefinitely for the safety of their students. Permanent closures, perhaps the most dramatic of actions that could be taken by school districts, have been debated since the beginning of the outbreak\u2014and that same debate is coming home to California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Tuesday, California Superintendent of Public Education Tony Thurmond expressed that it was highly unlikely for public school campuses to reopen in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. \u201cDue to the current safety concerns and needs for ongoing social distancing it currently appears that our students will not be able to return to school campuses before the end of the school year,\u201d said Thurmond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though it\u2019s wasn\u2019t necessarily a definitive yes, it was a very strong one. California had mostly left it up to specific schools and districts to determine closures. With little official guidance, a lot of grey area exists, which is why snippets such as Thurmond\u2019s can spark viral reactions. News outlets jumped on the quote, reporting that this was confirmation of year-long closures on the state level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following day, Governor Gavin Newsom <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7.com\/governor-newsom-today-california-schools-closed-superintendent-tony-thurmond-school-closures\/6069047\/\">confirmed<\/a> that schools in California wouldn\u2019t be reopening, but that classes would remain in session.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BREAKING?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#BREAKING<\/a> California schools will stay closed through the remainder of school year, but will continue online classes, Newsom says<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4DJWvrIHa0\">https:\/\/t.co\/4DJWvrIHa0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; ABC7 Eyewitness News (@ABC7) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ABC7\/status\/1245434604279853056?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 1, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California isn\u2019t the first to implement permanent closures. Kansas, Oklahoma, Vermont, Virginia, New Mexico, and Alabama have already declared schools to be closed for the rest of the academic year.
