{"id":2709,"date":"2020-03-26T10:00:24","date_gmt":"2020-03-26T17:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=2709"},"modified":"2020-03-26T17:02:32","modified_gmt":"2020-03-27T00:02:32","slug":"san-diego-city-council-passes-temporary-moratorium-on-evictions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=2709","title":{"rendered":"San Diego City Council Passes Temporary Moratorium on Evictions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Written by Michael Palomba<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Wednesday, the San Diego City Council voted unanimously to enact a temporary moratorium on evictions of both residents and businesses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Small Business Relief Fund was also established to support local businesses affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The fund will be created by repurposing around $4 million in existing grant funding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mayor Kevin Faulconer is also strongly behind the effort to help residents and businesses during this tough time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs jobs disappear, rent payments do not, so we\u2019re taking action to help San Diegans in need during the COVID-19 emergency,\u201d Mayor Faulconer said. \u201cThat\u2019s why we as a city are working diligently to provide relief to our residents and businesses who are complying with public health mandates and staying home or suspending their operations. This involves tenants, landlords and lenders, so in partnership with my City Council colleagues and the City Attorney, we will develop an ordinance that recognizes we are all in this together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is an emergency law and it will last in San Diego until May 31. Residents will need to demonstrate \u201ca substantial decrease in income or medical expenses,\u201d as a result of coronavirus to qualify. I applaud the city council, city attorney and city staff for taking quick action to help our community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">City Councilmember Georgette Gomez also made a statement after announcing the measure, \u201cMost of our small businesses have been forced to close, and countless San Diegans are losing work and income as we try to slow the spread of the virus.
