The decision comes following Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s order for city-owned parks, beaches, and trails to be closed down as too many San Diegans ignored social distancing guidelines.

The statement released by the Port of San Diego explains that “prioritizing public health and well-being, and to help minimize the spread of and exposure to Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19), the Port of San Diego is closing public parks around San Diego Bay, which includes beaches, parking lots, piers, and boat launches. The decision is effective immediately, is consistent with the County of San Diego’s amended public health order, and follows similar moves by the State of California and local city governments to further discourage non-essential gatherings of any size.”

While the beaches and parks are closed, the nearby sidewalks remain open for individuals to walk, run, and bike. The guideline of remaining six feet from anyone not of the same household remains in effect. The moves by the Port of San Diego and Mayor Faulconer align with decisions made at the state level by Governor Gavin Newsom.

For more information about the Port of San Diego’s response to the COVID-19 outbreak and updates on how the Port is supporting its partners and the community, visit portofsandiego.org/covid19.

Photo via Flickr

On Tuesday, the Port of San Diego officially announced the closure of beaches, parks, and boat launches in the San Diego Bay area.
