In a recently published <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofsandiego.com\/opinion\/2020\/02\/25\/san-diegos-zoning-codes-need-to-be-enforced-on-short-term-rentals\/\">op-ed<\/a> in the <em>Times of San Diego<\/em>, Bry talks about her fight to regulate how property owners can use their property.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She starts by claiming that \u201cthere is a continued refusal by the city administration and mayoral candidates Scott Sherman and Todd Gloria to acknowledge the obvious \u2014 the increase in short-term vacation rentals is one of the key drivers of these crises.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, in typical Democrat fashion, she proposes a new law to correct what she feels is a problem. \u201cAn immediate change is needed\u2014a law that requires all new apartments and homes, whether by discretionary or ministerial approval, be rented for at least a minimum of 30 days,\u201d she contends.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Mayoral candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bry4sd?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@bry4sd<\/a> writes in an op-ed that enforcing zoning laws on short-term rentals would bring 16,000 units back into the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SanDiego?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#SanDiego<\/a> housing marketplace.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/mo6vdU9HRm\">https:\/\/t.co\/mo6vdU9HRm<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/NohnlBxiiE\">pic.twitter.com\/NohnlBxiiE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Times of San Diego (@TimesofSanDiego) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TimesofSanDiego\/status\/1232401919261343744?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 25, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She goes on to blast current San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, as well as fellow candidates Scott Sherman and Todd Gloria. She rants that they \u201ctalk endlessly of lessening building restrictions and encouraging developers to build more, but neither acknowledges the obvious negative effect of STRs (short term rentals).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there is one key issue that Bry seems to be forgetting: <em>freedom<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We live in the freest country in the world, and Democrats like Bry are adamant about slapping restrictions on that freedom. Property owners worked hard to be able to afford their property. Why should Barbara Bry get to tell them that they can\u2019t use their property as they please, so long as it&#8217;s not harming others? Did she put in the long, hard hours that everyday San Diegans did to afford their property? No. She&#8217;s simply the power-hungry liberal elitist who thinks she should be able to control how people live their lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She ends her rant by saying \u201cit\u2019s time to enforce our existing laws to make housing San Diegans a priority and to stop a multi-billion-dollar industry from taking advantage of our city.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what it\u2019s actually time for is a realization. Too many people take our freedoms for granted and forget the true purpose of the government as delegated by the Constitution. The government is supposed to protect our freedoms, not restrict them.
