{"id":2372,"date":"2020-01-30T12:30:04","date_gmt":"2020-01-30T19:30:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=2372"},"modified":"2020-01-30T14:12:34","modified_gmt":"2020-01-30T21:12:34","slug":"san-diego-city-councils-electric-scooter-ban-shows-misplaced-priorities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=2372","title":{"rendered":"San Diego City Council&#8217;s Electric Scooter Ban Shows Misplaced Priorities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">W<\/span>ritten by Michael Palomba<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The age of personal responsibility and individual freedom seems to be coming to an end, at least in this nanny state that we call California.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the latest instance of local government thinking it knows better than the people it represents, the San Diego City Council has voted to ban motorized vehicles along many beaches here in San Diego.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motorized vehicles like electric scooters and e-bikes have been officially banned along Mission Beach and Pacific Beach, as well as Mission Park Bayside and La Jolla Shores. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ordinance, sponsored by City Councilwoman and mayoral candidate Barbara Bry, was passed by a slim 5-4 margin. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Councilmembers Georgette G\u00f3mez, Chris Ward, Scott Sherman, and Chris Cate dissented.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bry stated, \u201cThis will protect pedestrians and cyclists. The boardwalks are Class One bike paths and should be kept safe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a personal note, I find it interesting that Councilwoman Barbara Bry wants to keep us safe from electric scooters and bikes, but not from illegal aliens. Last year, she advocated for making San Diego a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.capoliticalreview.com\/capoliticalnewsandviews\/councilwoman-wants-san-diego-to-become-headquarters-for-illegal-aliens-at-taxpayer-expense\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">headquarters for illegals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I\u2019m sure <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.angelfamilies.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angel Families<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and many others would agree that illegals are a far bigger threat to our safety than electric scooters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can read more about Angel Families and their heartbreaking stories <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.angelfamilies.org\/stories\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is good, however, that Bry is making her priorities evident before the upcoming primary election. She&#8217;s allowing voters to see that she truly isn\u2019t worried about the safety of San Diegans and would rather focus on banning things she doesn\u2019t like. Bry has also advocated for a strict home-sharing policy that would limit homeowners in San Diego from renting out their homes for more than 90 days per year. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As far as I know, Bry did not contribute to anyone\u2019s mortgages, so I\u2019m not sure why she feels that she has the right to control how people use their homes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/e-scooter-4496668_640.jpg\" width=\"328\" height=\"246\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, back to the scooter ban. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Councilman Scott Sherman, who is also running for mayor of San Diego, had this to say about the ban: &#8220;Instead of trying to use regulations and common sense solutions let&#8217;s just ban the things \u2014 if we\u2019re going to ban scooters because of accidents then you need to ban bicycles too.\u201d Speaking sarcastically, of course.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Representatives from Bird, one of the most prominent electric scooter operators in the city, said the ban was \u201cshort-sighted\u201d and that riders would now be forced onto busy streets that may not even have bike lanes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Diego\u2019s ever-increasing regulations also stifle business and hurt the economy.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this month, Lime, one of the nation&#8217;s largest electric scooter operators, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kusi.com\/lime-pulls-scooters-from-san-diego-streets-amid-scooter-ban-and-declining-ridership\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pulled scooters from the entire city<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, citing unclear regulations causing profitability issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It seems that more and more government officials, local and national, are forgetting the true purpose of government. Its purpose is not to tell us what we can and can not do, but to secure our liberty and protect us from threats against it. When government officials fight to diminish our freedom, they become precisely the threat that they are elected to combat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Across the country, we see a rise in liberal officials trying to regulate every aspect of our lives. I\u2019m glad to know that Councilwoman Barbara Bry is no different.
