It seems that no real progress will be made because some high up city planner\u2014none other than SANDAG Executive Director Hasan Ikhrata\u2014wants to pay for his pet project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The SANDAG Board of Directors approved the issuance of the bonds despite criticism saying that they should focus on more important issues like fixing the congestion of highways and pothole-filled roads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, the program has to somehow be tied to &#8220;saving the environment.&#8221; Ikhrata said that the project is important to meet the state-mandated goal of reducing carbon emissions. \u201cThis region needs to meet very strict state requirements. You need to reduce vehicle travel,\u201d he said. \u201cBike investments would lead to reducing vehicle miles traveled.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, despite the fact that carbon emissions in San Diego are already <a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/2020\/01\/local-democrats-ignore-san-diegos-reduced-carbon-emissions\/\">dropping dramatically<\/a>, apparently more needs to be done and that includes reducing quality of life by taking away from the construction of proper roads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>County Supervisor Kristin Gaspar identified the absurd priorities forwarded by SANDAG, which continues to exploit taxpayers to support a tiny fraction of the local population.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">8 of the 10 most dangerous intersections are in N County (Oceanside &amp; Escondido). But you won\u2019t find them on the list of priorities approved by the SANDAG Board today who instead allocated $90 million in Transnet funds for bike projects used by less than 1% of the population. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/N9JM6bI4SE\">pic.twitter.com\/N9JM6bI4SE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Kristin Gaspar (@KristinDGaspar) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KristinDGaspar\/status\/1215810357916102656?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 11, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, these words from Ikhrata show a major folly of policymakers: the idea that if one thing is made more difficult then people will naturally do the alternative. The problem with this is that not everyone on the road is one person going a short distance. County Supervisor Jim Desmond correctly pointed out that \u201cbicycle lanes do not help young families move their children around. It does not help businesses moving goods around. It does not help the average everyday person who\u2019s trying to get errands done.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Our priority should not be building bike lanes for the few at $5.5 million per mile, but improving our highways for the many. We owe it to our young families, our thriving business community, and the millions of San Diegans that use our highways and roads.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Supervisor Jim Desmond (@jim_desmond) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jim_desmond\/status\/1215713932410621952?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 10, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the diverting of important resources from improving roads to creating bike paths no one asked for, it\u2019s unlikely the funding will even matter. The project is already one year and $79 million over budget.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The money will likely just be thrown into the void, like every other loan to SANDAG.
