{"id":2205,"date":"2020-01-10T11:00:23","date_gmt":"2020-01-10T18:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=2205"},"modified":"2020-01-07T12:23:33","modified_gmt":"2020-01-07T19:23:33","slug":"san-diego-city-council-candidate-joe-leventhal-announces-safer-schools-initiative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/?p=2205","title":{"rendered":"San Diego City Council Candidate Joe Leventhal Announces \u201cSafer Schools\u201d Initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Initiative highlights Leventhal\u2019s long-term commitment to education<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(San Diego, CA) \u2013 Joe Leventhal, candidate for San Diego City Council, District 5, today announced his \u201cSafer Schools\u201d initiative.<\/p>\n<p>Leventhal\u2019s Safer Schools initiative would task the community planning groups with examining the areas within a half-mile of all K-12 schools in the City of San Diego with the goal of increasing safe access to and from our city\u2019s schools. The community planning groups would, in turn, make recommendations to the Planning Commission after soliciting parent and community input.<\/p>\n<p>In particular, the community planning groups would be tasked with considering the need for: additional stop signs, other traffic signs, or traffic lights; speed limits; curb paintings; expanded opportunities for School Safety Patrols; and any other recommendations within the community planning groups\u2019 purview. The community planning groups would also be tasked with ensuring our schools are accessible for those with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe safety of our children has to be a top priority in our city,\u201d said Leventhal.\u00a0 \u201cAlthough the City Council has little oversight when it comes to our region\u2019s education, it absolutely has a role to play in keeping our children safe. This initiative is one step toward that end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Once elected to the San Diego City Council, Joe will prioritize solutions to reduce homelessness, enhance public safety, and expand road repairs. Joe believes that bold, collaborative leadership, as he\u2019s demonstrated throughout his life, is the best way to approach San Diego\u2019s persistent challenges.<\/p>\n<p>The 5th District includes the communities of Black Mountain Ranch, Carmel Mountain Ranch, Miramar Ranch North, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Encantada, Rancho Pe\u00f1asquitos, Sabre Springs, San Pasqual, Scripps Miramar Ranch and Torrey Highlands.
