Attempting to raise your taxes so that they can continue issuing government handouts. This time, it\u2019s for \u201caffordable housing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The City Council Rules Committee voted 3-2 to declare that San Diego is facing a shortage of affordable housing, warranting a $900 million housing bond.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That $900 million bond would be funded through a property tax surcharge within the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vote paves the way for placing the bond measure on the ballot. It&#8217;s expected to be considered by the full City Council next June for the November 2020 ballot. A 6-3 supermajority would be required, since tax increases require a two-thirds majority vote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Councilman Chris Ward said, \u201cAt the end of the day, we\u2019re not going to end homelessness unless we successfully house people.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Councilman Mark Kersey, on the other hand, said, \u201cYou\u2019re now asking San Diegans to subsidize the construction of units that are nicer and more expensive than the ones they themselves live in,\u201d he said. \u201cI think this is going to be a tough sell.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He voted against the measure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of the day, this is another attempt by local Democrats to redistribute wealth in the way they see fit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have seen in the past how government subsidized housing plays out, and it never goes well (see <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/business\/archive\/2015\/06\/section-8-is-failing\/396650\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Section 8 housing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/sandiegonewsdesk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Waste.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"240\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/23024164@N06\/8179870881\/in\/photolist-dsPYCz-j3RbuX-9K2QYL-H8HvUw-262Jfmo-fBLJKg-5bGH1i-8VDGXW-2efeo9W-avZkpD-8T9DZK-72Gf7r-8twPji-5kSjkd-p1neXi-hUFt83-gUsjkt-2enrewv-RrwT86-4AQjyp-TN8bHh-MB7Htr-fkBXun-gFm2j5-7m2qGc-ahwGjA-6vPAd9-YKdyU-2ehs2YN-Tr1PBo-gTMbf7-4nGJEU-2eHTupJ-7qrdKp-2aasFaG-dwRe7P-RrHmfc-CnEBgu-ahtNwe-fysKT5-qxrQUJ-6qugSU-8yDQFd-7oA2WP-WrFS1M-57YUEB-p6t9pC-dPZPyr-awvkAp-2fmvRXn\">Photo by Damian Gadal via Flickr<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This proposed tax increase comes as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2019\/10\/20\/opinion-prop-13-remains-a-revered-citizen-sponsored-initiative\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the future of Prop 13<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> protections remains uncertain. Prop 13 protects California residents from property tax increases by basing the tax base on the purchase price of the house, rather than the market value.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What California needs to do to provide affordable housing is to allow\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/how-to-find-affordable-housing-2016-5\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">private industry to take it over<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and to provide incentive for housing suppliers to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we all know, especially in California, the government is known for inefficiency. So why would anyone think that allowing them to handle the situation would lead to it being solved?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/politics\/article\/Train-to-nowhere-Here-s-how-high-speed-project-13621347.php\">High Speed Rail project<\/a> is anything to go by, it\u2019s easy to see that the affordable housing projects may be horribly mismanaged, and may take far more time and money than current figures estimate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So when you see this measure on the ballot next year, just remember government intervention usually doesn\u2019t lead to the most effective, efficient solutions. Instead, those are almost exclusively created through private industry.
